Grill or BBQ?

Can you use a propane grill (always had horrible luck with charcoal) to barbecue?

I got some really good baby back ribs, rubbed them with my secret dry rub, and tried to cook them on the indirect heat for a few hours.

Well...DH (Designated Hot grill boss) was in charge of flipping the last hour and put them over the DIRECT heat. Either that or just the nature of the propane heat dried them out without getting a nice BBQ texture.

I hate to break down and buy a smoker. Maybe I'll try Alton Brown's flowerpot BBQ technique.

Need some suggestions!
