Hey Drider--
Its a lot of work but ya gotta do it, and just because you find people with the same or similar name to your family doesn't mean that is them. there really isn't any way to definitively prove that your relative is the person listed on a list or roll, as they didn't have social security numbers or dna back then.

But when you do the genealogy, you will likely realize that even if you have a relative named Ella Belle D. V. Van Hemp Smith Furgoson, that there are unbelieveably a million of them! Everyone named their kids the same thing, especially in families.

But the good news is that you will also likely meet other people who have already done some of your family tree research, and hopefully have done a good job with supporting documents. And in meeting your distant cousins you may get all the answers you seek and more.
