Ah, in the glory days, when tax policy, management goals and investor attitudes were different. Basic R&D at the corporate level was viewed as a long term investment. We had Bell Labs, Xerox-PARC, Fairchild Semiconductor, 3M, DuPont Experimental Station, the Skunk Works...
