NMAI National Powwow

Posted 12-05-2007 at 03:02 PM by eap7
On Aug. 10-12, I attended the National Museum of the American Indian's National Powwow in Washington, DC. I was very excited about the powwow, and I stayed with a bunch of friends from Dartmouth College who had driven over night, all the way from New Hampshire, to attend this historic event. I say historic because this powwow was put on by the Smithsonian's NMAI, and to me it represented the museum's commitment to engaging with contemporary Indian tribal nations. The three day powwow's theme...

55th Annual Tulsa Powwow

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 I attended the 55th Annual Tulsa Powwow on July 21-22. The powwow was held indoors (with AC!) at the convention center. Somewhat ironically and humorously, the powwow was held right next door to the PBR (Professional Bull Riders), and it was funny to see dancers milling around with the cowboys. Dighton, MA Powwow

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 The Red Road 5th Annual Native American Sobriety Powwow, put on by the Dighton Council Oak intertribal association, was held on June 16-17 in Dighton, MA. This powwow was practically in my own backyard, because I live in the next town over and even went to the regional public HS in Dighton. It was a beautiful weekend for a powwow, and there was a pretty good turn out of dancers and...

Gathering of Nations

Monday, May 14th, 2007 My trip to GON was a very eventful one. It was an adventure just getting to the powwow! I left Providence, RI on Thurs. afternoon and my flight was late, causing me to miss my connection in Newark, NJ. Of the 32 people on my flight, 29 of us missed our connecting flights! After arguing with Continental airline for several hours, they finally agreed to give us hotel rooms. Only four and...

UCONN Powwow

Saturday, April 7th, 2007 On Sat., March 31, I attended the University of Connecticut Native American Cultural Society Office’s 16th annual Light the Lodge Powwow with my mom and friend Caitlin. I had never attended this powwow before, and it was well worth the drive on a beautiful, sunny day. Northern CT is very scenic, with forests and lakes, so we were...
