Homework

Posted 01-14-2009 at 06:59 AM by k9soldier
When I asked my son, how was school...what did you learn today? He would answer "not much"... usually if you wanted to know more, you had to pry.. and after much effort you learned... not much was in fact the correct answer. Reading, writing and arithmetic these are the lessons taught at school. They claim you need them to be successful in life. I would argue that the lessons of fortitude, generosity, bravery and wisdom are lessons far more valuable. These are lessons learned at home......

Hands of time

Posted 11-27-2008 at 12:14 PM by k9soldier
It seems every year that I reach a point of just being burned out. I love my chosen profession, but I work 12-14 hours aday 7 days a week from Jan.-Sept. Come the first part of October most of my students(k-9) are done and earning their keep in the fields and marshes of the country. Now it becomes necessary to work on me. Some years I'm easier to repair than others, this year duct tape and super glue don't seem to be working as well. But there is one place I can always go and "be there"...

When did yesterday become today?
When did yesterday slip away?
What happened... where'd it go?
Yesterday?..... I don't know.
Yesterday I set the pace.
Yesterday I won the race.
Yesterday I could hold back..slow and steady,
still reign victorious over those thought they were ready.
Yesterday I could make em' smile from dusk to dawn.
Yesterday my knees still held me strong.
"What do ya' wanna be son, when you grow up?"...

When we meet face to feet

Posted 02-13-2008 at 02:18 PM by k9soldier
You don't know me, but I've been around.
I'm that guy you'll see in town.
Walking the street in front of flag flying stores.
Standing outside.... too many closed doors.
Yesterday's hero, no longer fits in...
haunted by ghosts, gaunt and thin.
Family in Dallas, a long ways away...
who knows by now, could be L.A.
History has taken more than just years.
History has left me too many tears.
You don't know me, but I've been around....
