Grizzly,

Hmmmm? It's funny how they never address the history and origins of the "World's Championship Hoop Dance Contest" do they?

Probably because the Heard Museum has a skeleton in their closet concerning where it originated?

Thumbs down World Championship???

I think I said this before, but it bears repeating...In almost ALL other sports in the world where the winner bears the title, WORLD CHAMPION, they generally have to compete upon the best in the world several times over. No disrespect intended to the hoop dancers who show up at the Heard, but just because they call it a World Championship, doesn't mean it is.
it would be like me having a frybread making contest and calling it the World Championship of Frybread. there still needs to be some criteria for the competition. THUS...everyone knows that the Hoop dance contest is just another money raising scheme for the Heard museum, another way to capitalize on the wonderful Native Culture of the southwest. What gets me is that people-NATIVE people actually pay to get into see it! I remember when it used to be free.

If they have a frybread champeen then I want to be a judge. I'd be willing to eat that much just so that our people could name a champ.

No they don't... They should just call it something like... "Annual Southwest Hoop Dance Contest" instead of "World's Championship"... I totally agree.

I'm on my way!

Well, I'm heading down there. My "snag" is one of the judges so we get a mini-vacation for free. My first time checking this out so hopefully it's not as bad as you all say it is. If it is then, oh well, it's free!

Cool mini-vacation

I don't think any of us said it was "bad", just that it shouldn't be called a World Championship when any person can walk up and register to be in it, that and the fact that the Heard Museum is the #1 entity to exploit the Native American in the State of Arizona. It may be a free vacation to you, but the 12,000 people who show up and pay $10 a head to get in, are paying for it-and then some. If the top prize is $2500-where does the rest of the $$ go???
to fly in judges and singers and put them in hotels for the weekend, sure-but I'm sure the museum doesn't have to pay to use their own facilities.
Anyway, remember it's outside, on a lawn and there are NO chairs. Only the judges and singers get chairs, everyone else brings their own- plus blankets, kids, umbrella's, etc. The weather says high of 70's this weekend plus chance of thunderstorms both days.
Oh and I don't care who you are, it's pretty difficult to watch hoop dance after hoop dance after hoop dance. That part is pretty boring too. But have fun and welcome to AZ.

I think you should've put husband in quotation marks because obviously he isn't much of a husband if he's someone else's snag! And another thing, are you the wife? If not, and I'm sure you're not, then get a life and mind your own business!

Okay. Time to explain my comment. . .

I and my father are Co-Founders of the "World's Championship Hoop Dance Contest." Our intentions were both to preserve a part of history as well as decide who was the best hoop dancer.

We began it in 1991 at the NM State Fair Indian Village where my father was in charge of the Indian entertainment and was searching for a new way to bring in visitors. Originally it was called the "Tony White Cloud Memorial World Hoop Dance Championships" in honor of Tony White Cloud, a Jemez Pueblo hoop dancer whom we credited with inventing the modern multi-hoop dance as we know it today.

In the inception, I invented the criteria that the hoop dance contest was to be judged using the International Olympic Likert System of scoring of 1 to 10 (10 being the maximum score) in 5 categories. For hoop dancers I created 5 categories (precision, timing/rhythm, showmanship, creativeness and speed), that could be adapted to both Indian Dancing and the Likert System, that would serve as checks and balances to give each dancer an even chance in winning this event.

After the first year at the NM State Fair (Eddie Swimmer from NC was the first World Champion), we decided to offer it to other venues where it could get the most exposure. We targeted it to go to one of three venues: The Heard Museum, Schemitzun or Hinkley Grand Casino powwow, since we had contacts there.

The Heard Museum immediately wanted it.

Once the "2nd Annual Tony White Cloud Memorial World Championship Hoop Dance Contest" was decided to be held at the Heard Museum, my father and I identified 5 powwow announcers from 5 regions (East coast, West coast, Canada, N. Plains and S. Plains) to serve as judges. This provided maximum exposure as these judges advertised the contest everywhere they emceed.

We also broke down the contest into three categories: Youth, Adult and Seniors to make sure the prize monies would be spread. Also, my father and I recommended that each dancer be allowed to choose the music he/she wanted to use: by providing both N. and S. Singers, providing a tape recorder or allowing them to bring in their own singer.

Finally we asked that those who made the finals to explain or give a story of why they do the hoop dance.

All these ideas were implemented and to my knowledge, are still used today.

Quentin Pipestem from Alberta, Canada was the winner of the second contest once it was moved to the Heard Museum.

__

Have you ever seen the movie "Working Girl" with Melanie Griffith, where her idea is capitalized and credited by her unscrupulous superior?

__

In the end I have to agree with Skybird5, in that the Heard Museum capitalized on the Native American (us), and ran with an idea that was not theirs to begin with. Eventually, as co-founders, I and my father were phased out of this contest, its planning or any involvement. We wrote a letter of protest to the director of the Heard Museum and never received a reply.

No credit has been publically given by the Heard Museum to the cofounders of their event or how this idea came to be.

"Exploitation and Stealing from the people whom they supposedly represent. . . are the words that I use to describe this event."

__

Skybird5,

The reason we called it the Worlds Championship is that it is advertised on the internet and written publications that are available worldwide. If you know of any hoop dancers in other countries outside of N. America, it was our intention that they were indeed invited to compete.

P.S.

They held the first World Championship Fry Bread Contest in Pawhuska, OK last year. *L

Wow!

To Who Me;
Wow that's some story. If I were you, I think I would be/would have been writing letters everywhere. Local papers, Indian papers, etc. This is a story I think people should know about.
I used to attend the Hoop Dance Contest, the first time was the year it was at the Arizona center in downtown Phoenix. After that, I went every year and met some really nice people and dancers. I remember that the dancers were encouraged to bring their own music/singers and explain what they were doing. Then one year a friend of mine wasn't allowed to dance because he couldn't produce his tribal ID. Granted, some of the people who used to dance in the contest may have had some weak "tribal" links, but it seemed to me that if you made the effort to come and knew how to hoop dance, you should be allowed to compete. The title isn't Native American hoop dance competition, after all.
Then, Derrick won. Granted, he's a great hoop dancer but he was also an employee of the museum. Or had some type of affiliation w/ the museum at the time. It was these little things that led me to see the light about the 'so-called' contest. It's a money making event for the museum only.
Any one else have some comments?
