Oh and we had a vendor behind of us who was playing hip hop music and I asked him to turn it down because I couldn't hear the pow wow music and he threw a fit! He actually walked up to my shade area and stood there and said, I can't hear it at all and I said, Um, maybe becase you just turned it down? Some of these things I complain about are just common sense things folks: It's terrific to have a vendor with Native Music, It's not terrific to put his booth right next to the arena...he should have set up farther away so he could play his music. And yes, you can sit under my shade but since you weren't invited and I don't know you, maybe you could introduce yourself and try to be friendly?
And it's not like I sat through 3 days of misery, I just went for what I wanted to be there for and then left. I got to see people I hadn't seen for a while, visit a bit, sing a little and then leave. Granted I had to pay $5 for that privilege....LOL!
This situations Skybird described are everywhere whether it's indoors or not and not only at powwows either.

Short of banning canopies and assigning seating areas, I don't know what the ASU committee can do to please everyone.

Personally, I don't particularly care for indoor powwows or powwows under a hugh tent. If anything, I really like the open outdoor arenas the have a high arbor surrounding the dance area. You only find those on the rez!

Why don't committees here in AZ have people take their canopies down at night?

Ok, so now the little kids are a waste of time?? Lets suggest to every powwow committee out there that the Tiny Tot category is a waste of time and to no longer include them in their powwows.

Just when I think I seen and heard it all....maybe we should have all gone to the 49 and complained about the price of beer too...

[/QUOTE]

Oh dear, 50 CAL is not happy!!! BOO HOO!! Once again I say, you need to learn how to read comments IN CONTEXT and understand what a person is saying. 50 CAL has some major misplaced anger at something and is choosing to throw it out on a public forum of the internet...hmmm??? I never said anything derogatory about the Tiny Tots or the kids who were dancing, I said it was a Time waster because it was not the best time to have such an event, perhaps 'waste" wasn't the right word, maybe Time taker would have been better.

And I wasn't "COMPLAINING" about the price of beer, Techno posted a question about people who went to the 49, so I posted exactly what happened at the party. If I was complaining about the price of drinks I would have said "I can't believe I had to pay $4 for a bottle of beer", when all I said was drinks were pricey. Haven't you ever read a review of any kind of event, party, social outing, etc???? It includes things like details.

If I remember correctly, Lee used to allow a limited number of canopies in certains areas. I don't understand how it got to be how it is now. Oh well, it's over.

Personally, I have made a rule for myself at powwows if I put up a canopy. I always pack a small rope or yarn to block off my section of my canopy. I learned my lesson at many powwows that there are people who don't know the proper protocol when canopies are put up. Especially poeple who don't attend powwows frequently are not aware and think it's okay. Even at indoor powwows, you put a blanket up and end up seeing someone sitting on it. You have to be blunt and to the point, tell them to move. Sometimes being nice isn't enough. As for the tiny tot comment, well I have to say that you have to choose your words wisely. Don't just get online and say kids are a waste of time. I have a child and she has been dancing tiny tot since she was still in diapers. She'll be entering juniors pretty soon and I am very proud of her. It saddens me when children are not taken seriously. They will be the next generation to carry on the powwows, the songs, ceremonies and they are the future. If you have anything negative to comment, bicker about alchohol that hinders our nation. All the alcohol that is served at 49's and seeing the skins the next day trying to overcome a hangover. Now that is something to b**ch about. I have alot to say, but as ignorant as we are as "natives" the wise words are seldom absorbed. Like my mom always says, "The words probably goes in one ear and goes out the other". So, with that notion, see ya'll at another powwow.

If you remember years ago, the band field was a lot bigger and the arena was further east of where it has been lately. When that new court was placed in the area, the field was shrunk to half it's original size.

Maybe it's time to find another home or use the Sun Devil Stadium.

I don't know about you, but as a newcomer to AZ and having to deal with shades, I think its crappy to rope off your area. You don't have to be someway with your shade. If people don't know the protocol invite them to sit with you. Cuz I see so many shades that are non-dancers and have only two people sitting underneath.

This is absolutely true. There are way too many empty canopies taking up space some with no one sitting underneath them. Granted that some are used by dancers that may be out in the dance arena, but for the most part people tend to gob up as much space as they can and mark them as their territory.

I don't know how many mean looks I get when I go out into the seating area to check the sound level coverage. I need to be able to walk under some of the canopies just to get from point A to point B.
