Fewer drum groups this year, but there was enough to have a good time: Thunderhill (SH), Northern Cree (NH), War Scout (2nd), Hyphe Boyz, (4th), Red Buffalo (3rd), Red Sky, Southern Extreme (1st) West Coast, and Black Bear Crossing.

The highest unleaded fuel price I saw was $3.65, but there were places where it was $3.35.

I dont know any of the dancer's names but my favorite Grass dancer is the guy with glasses that wears red, yellow, black, blue regalia....he really gets down! I know this could be a lot of people, but this guy has been at every northern california pow wow (and reno) that I've been to and he works it hard! Can anybody tell me which one he is? I'm sure he won SOMETHIN! I've seen him drum a few times too.

Although there was not a single rain drop all weekend, it was much cooler than usual on Friday and Saturday. The weather was absolutely perfect on Sunday.

I don't know what it was, but that fine black dust is hard to get out of your nose and ears!

Saturday evening was very dusty, but the dampening of the grounds on Sunday along with the straw sort of helped quite a bit on Sunday.

Yeah there were about 15 give or take a couple in woman's fancy. Lots of goot dancers there in all the categories. It was fun...a bit dusty(still shakin out the dirt) and I didnt expect all those pot holes in the arena. Oh yeah no 49!!! What the??? I always hear about Stanford's 49 and of course the year I go the security buckles down and stops it. One of my friends barely was able to sing a half of verse and those guys put the spotlight on him...lmao. Oh well maybe next time...

Professor Phillips had it written down as the "Hyphe Boys" (sounds like hyfe). They are from Oakland and blend in with the hip-hop scene.

Well, I 'll tell you what I am from Oakland too and I can tell you something about this whole hyphy deal.

Its a bunch of horse puckey.....

Hyphy is defined as: Although mostly Bay Area, getting "hyphy" is more of an Oakland word defining getting ignorant, drunk/high, and quite violent within a group of friends. (w.urbandictionary.com).

I was there, thought (IMHO) this Drum had a lot of work to do and wondered how in the world they got a seat at Stanford, a drug and alcohol free event with a name that means "high on ecstacy and pot"...... Like I said before, maybe I am just too old....

I'm from the bay....and I'm in my 20's so I know about the "Hyphy Movement" as we call it. It's not actually the easiest thing to define. It doesnt always mean drunk or high. Its more wild, crazy, full of energy. A LOT...even most of them do get high and drunk and all that, but you can "Get Hyphy" without substances. For those of you who are southerners....its just like "Krunk" a lot of them get drunk and high and all that and some people do it totally sober. Just like "Krunk" with its popularity the meaning evolved. Its just a certain style of dancing, way of acting & even dressing. Its craziness. It's bein wild and actin a fool. Drivin with the doors open, I think there is a time and a place for it and most people (especially the younger ones) take it too far. It can't be your whole life. You cant "go dumb" all the time cause then youre just dumb. I must admit that at times I get "super hyphy" without substance and its fun. Kinda like being hyper with a Bay area twist I guess. Just a hood way of bein "silly" lol. It probably still doesnt make any sense.....

OK, now yer speaking my language.... I do not mean to judge.. My generation would have called them "All Crazy Boys" or something like that, but this makes sense, and I fully support our younger Drums... Thanks for the clarification!

No problem....anytime. But dont get me wrong I do think its all out of control....just like everything else, it seems like young and ignorant people dont understand "everything in moderation" and they ALWAYS take things too far. That's how people get hurt and what not. I do know a lot of "Hyphy" individuals that stay high and/or drunk all day and that is just obnoxious and stupid to me, but then thats just my opinion.

I agree whitewave; personally I was born in '74 (no, not 1874) and lived in backwoods MO and Oakland CA, so yeah I have been exposed to lots of partying in my time. Not to go off on a tangent, but this is why we have our 20's.... LOL.

That being said, powwow is not the time or the place.

I fully agree with you on that... Im only human and I can't judge, but yeah, time and a place. That's how I was raised..

From what I observed, these boys were very cordial and well-manner in a respectful way to me. They even returned a piece of sound equipment that I accidently left with them that I know other individuals would've just taken off with.
