You can get more smilies when replying to messages - there are one on the right of the box where you type your reply, and under them, it says [More]. Click on that and you get a window with more smilies and if you click on one, it'll be put in your message. Hope that helps.

Watch out, guys. If there's one thing I learned in college, it's "Never mess with a psych major".

Can you use bigger letters on the screen? It's hard to hear that little font you use LOL!

Ok Trob, take a look to the right when you key a post at the little smilies and such. There is a icon named "More" Click on that. You will get the fancy dudes on your screen. If not update your flash thingy and update your browser.

My wife and I own the business and will be handed down to my kids when we retire. That's if we retire. We both enjoy it too much.

Now Pre-Doc Solaris, Just remember the first three rules of medicine.

1. Medicine is not a science. It is a guessing game. That's why they call it a practice. Your practicing to get it right.

2. No one gets better untill the bill is paid in full.

3. Don't forget rule one and two.

Oh, I don't know if I'll ever be a doctor, certainly no the medical type you're implying. If I get my doctorite in Psychology, it'd just so I could charge my couples more for their therapy...I won't get to write prescriptions...dang!

i want to take a moment to clarify a few things. first of all, i am talking about white people powwowing, not 1/2 breeds, not white looking indian people, but white people.

the comments about bowling, darts, softball, etc. thats for humor. i know our humor is often real hard for white people to understand, and you see how well it was understood.

the cherokee poke wasn't directed towards legit cherokees, just the hoky schmokey wannabes that dont know of any other tribes to claim. real cherokees know whats up; i think they hate this phenomenon more than me.

second, i am a product of my environment. i listen to my elders and i hate to break it to you, but there are many angry elders in my community who dont want any more of our culture being mimicked or borrowed, and quite frankly they are tired of sharing. we learn from our past, at least somebody does.

this post was originally intended to let the wannabes know that it aint all good. even if you have some indian teaching you, or telling you its ok, its not, not everywhere.

there are many people that agree with me, even if they are too scared to come out and say it.

i applaud the moderators for not deleting this thread, i thought for sure it was gone. some of these mods get off on appearing to be the voice of the nations, and making white people feel welcome to suit up or sit at the drum.

i do not hate white people, i just hate white people trying to be indian, there is a difference. our culture, our language, our spirituality has all been stripped and some of us desperately cling to what little we have left. some of our people are more forgiving and passive than others, some are not.

to the genious who critiqued my spelling of powwow, wow! nice job at solidifying your superiority. i'll spell the word how ever i please, the english language is secondary in my world.

to the anishinaabewikwe who tried to suggest i dont know my own language, aaniin dash gaa-onji-ikidoyan? niin gosha ninitaa-ojibwem. mii apane go aabajitooyaan o'ow anishinaabemowin, endaaso-giizhik, gabe-giizhik!

all in all, i want people to realize we are not all wishy-washy passive people who continue to have our culture and ways infringed upon. some of us have had it. some of us are angry. some of us want our languages back and are fighting everyday to do so. maybe i'm not skillful enough in this english language to explain myself clearly enough without sounding like a crazy militant young buck.

i wish more people would back me up. i applaud those that did. powwow is ours, it always will be. you will always be a sham in our book.

yeah some get adopted/married in, learn correctly, blah fricken blah! these are usually the ones who know their place and will be the first to tell you.

what really gets me is the people who come to this site and ask some off the wall questions requesting info that in no way should be shared on the f-ing internet. if this is the only place you have to go to learn, get a new frikken hobby! i like the fact that you can come to this site, read powwow winners, powwow gossip, post pics, watch vids, thats all cool. what gets me is how this site operates as some people's only elder, their only teacher. they learn something that some know-it-all moderator posts, and go to their "drums" or dances and imply their new "teachings". thats a whole lotta hogwash.

i know to some of you white people, my words shatter your world, your whole understanding. it isn't my intentions to make you feel bad, but rather to let you know how YOU MAKE ME FEEL! but i am as about as strait forward as your going to get. it aint ok. it aint alright. and i aint ever gunna need no good english!:tounge_sm

now some may disagree with my opinions. and of course, those are the ones who have contributed to this chimokamaan phenomenon! so to each their own. if white people can come to a powwow site and express themselves and steal, steal, steal, then i should be able to express myself too.

it sickens me to read some of this stuff on here, i'm just returning that favor. i encourage feedback, discussion, and even disagreement. tell me why i am wrong and i will ask you how do you think i got to be this way?

Having myself spent more than a few decades with a misplaced sense of hate and resentment in my heart it took much effort to overcome my own bias. I can only hope and pray for you that one day you will find the maturity to get over your resentments.
I must say that I feel pretty preplexed that you had to bring Elders into this tantrum of yours. Too many times they are used as some type of verbal double edge sword that is used to justify someones bombast. If powwows is your only indicator that is of any worth as to how Indian you and they are then I really feel sorry for you because you are lost. Dancing, dressing up in buckskin beads and feathers does not and never will make you what you are. Seriously, is that the image you have of yourself? Now, it speaks heeps for why you are dissing white people in such a manner....Because your image and idea of self worth of yourself is threatened.
The image of self that you show to the rest of humanity is not about what is on the outside for that is just a shell young man.A mere container for your spirit. One day you may find that it is the Spirit that matters as to what you project .
Here is a prayer I came up with to help me some years back and I do my best to pratice this daily even though believe me it is not easy and at times I come up wanting but its the ability to recognize this that makes the effort worthwhile. Some of you may recognize the tempo of the wording.

To the One Above, pity me.
In a humble maner I seek.
The BRAVERY to accept the strife and hardships in my life.
The FORTITUDE to overcome them.
GENEROSITY of my words, deeds and spirit
And WISDOM to recognize and apply them.

white people "powwowing"

Just curious - How do you feel about a person who is part choctaw and sac-fox (but never knew my great grandmother), and raised white in a white mans world, with no connections otherwise to American Indian acquaintances, not knowing customs, taboos, etc., how do you feel about someone like me attending a pow wow and trying to learn about my heritage and culture the hard way. Oh, and truth is no problem, it is what it is. Like I said, just curious. Thanks.

I'm not a rude person. Nor am I argumentative. But how do you think you're gonna find out about your Choctaw and Sac-N-Fox heritage and culture from your great grandmother's side at a social event like a powwow that is attended by so many different tribes with so many cultures and traditions?

bhamblin 10-15-2008 02:23 PM

To Joes' Dad

Ok, I understand it's not the best place to go for that. But since a journey begins with the first step, where would you suggest I legitimately go to take that first step? Seriously searching, not just for the fun of it, and not intending to offend anyone, where would you if you were in my place? And going to a pow wow and just observing people and events, is not unproductive in itself, if you try not to be a nuisance. Thanks, b

Ojibwecommodbod you are probably the Ojib dude I've seen at some local "wannabee powwows" drumming, dancing intertribals and acting like you're indianer than thou'!

let me put it to you this way. There have been a couple of rocks found on earth that they believe were expelled from the surface of Mars. But, I wouldn't be looking on the Earth, all over the place to find a rock or two to learn about Mars, kinda hit and miss...I'd go to Mars itself, if that's what I wanted to learn about.
