Change is inevitable
"Change is inevitable. You can't stop the clock."

I brought my dad to live with me. I want to tap into the knowledge that has taken a lifetime for him to learn. So we have daily conversations about culture, powwows, the past vs. the future.

He is a product of the Indian boarding schools, raised among Natives of many tribes and moved to an urban area to start a family. He is knowledgeable about both inter-tribal and tribal specific powwows and is credited with introducing powwows to the American Southwest. He is kind, patient and has earned respect from many.

I grew up in the city. I have attended powwows all my life. I am college educated and have traveled to approximately 40 countries and 49 states sharing culture in performances, lectures and powwows. I now work as a cultural specialist and network with Native entities and individuals across Indian Country.

We often talk about change to powwows. I am of the belief powwows constantly change away from the nucleus, never to return. Change is inevitable if it is to survive.

Dad continues to practice the protocols and thinking of his generation. Like many Native elders, he does not like a lot of the changes to powwows that he grew up with. And it bothers him.

We are lucky that we have traveled together to most of the big powwows coast-to-coast in the United States and some in Canada. We have made many extended family members from many tribes. We talk to them about how powwow used to be compared to the present.

As powwow branches farther away from where it began, it will continue to change and be re-interpreted. Each generation will bring new changes. I have already seen it in my lifetime. Some of it is good. Some is questionable.

But the one constant is, "Powwows will continue to change. It is inevitable."
