I registered my friend yesterday for the Free dancer registration thing and I got back a 7 page info packet in email. It has maps, rules, directions, stuff you can/can't bring, schedules, etc. Very helpful.

Thus far, NO CHAIRS, COOLERS OR OUTSIDE food will be allowed. No pop up tents (DUH!) either.
And according to the schedule the Jr. Adults and Adults won't be contesting until Saturday night.

Don't go!!!

Boycott this one too!!!!!!!

Just kidding. Figured that would get some attention.

Anyway, could somebody please note the names of the other drums who set up tonight (aside from the hosts and invited) and post it on here later? Thanks!

I figure it'll be the usual jaahnies and o'odhams but maybe some others might set up that will make the trip out there later this weekend worth while (for me anyway).

Otherwise it's looking like a big ::YAWN:: with who's going to be there for sure.

Early reports of the registration (at approximately 6PM) were unfavorable. I was phoned at work and told that the committee allowed the first 16 drums ONLY to set up, and that they were treating the singers rather harshly (i.e. telling them that the had too many singers, being very bossy, etc.). Jeez, it's Glendale stadium...they should have MORE than enough room to allow EVERYBODY's drums to set up!

Likewise, due to a computer glitch, all the dancer registrations that were faxed into the committee were unavailable, creating a long like of cranky dancers to register.

I was also told that some of the staff were rather rude to the singers as well.

FYI: for those singers/dancers who don't look Indian enough to the commitee, bring your tribal ID or a CDIB.

I'm goin' up with the Rez Riders Tomorrow (about 100 bikes) and I hope things are going a little smoother tomorrow.

I'm going to support my son dancing.

Ok so from what I can gather, there was extra money for Day money for 11 drums so the first 11 drums that registered when registration opened (at 10am) were allowed to register. When i arrived onsite (3:00pm) , singers were asking to register and they were told the drum registration was closed. And this was the decision of the AD, Larry Yazzie-when asked he said, we all ready set up the arena with room for those 11 drums only. Yeah, figure that one out. So the drums who are there are:
Hosts and Invited-
BlackLodge
R-Krew
Cozad
Southern Express
Others-
Omaha Whitetail
Red Hammer
Zotigh
Thunderboy
New Circle
Native Boyz
Sacred Wind
Tha Tribe
Wild Rose (?)
Black Creek

I think i got that right. the sound is a bit sketchy in the stadium, simply because it's TOO Big. The pow wow area is in roughly 1/3 of the stadium floor-its kinda cool cuz the field is outside growing, LOL. but the dance arena is covered with red carpet and then chairs have been spread around that. The Info sheets said 500 chairs, but they had 200 more brought in just before Grand entry. The sound just floats straight up so depending on where you're standing you may or may not be able to hear very well.

I volunteered with registration/tabulation and yes there were long lines of hot, cranky dancers. And yes, it appeared that most of the online dancer registrations didn't really get processed correctly so many dancers had to fill out forms again. Also dancers who registered at GON, their registration didn't seem to make it either. That whole process was much more time consuming than it needed to be. The disappointing part for many dancers was that registration closed at 6:00 pm, SHARP and grand entry was at 7:00pm. There wasn't much leniency given to dancers who were in line at 6pm or who walked up at 6:10-if you didn't get there to register before 6pm, you don't get to register until sat. morning at 8am.

I also helped take numbers for grand entry and by my count there were 580 dancers with numbers and about 25 or so who didn't have numbers. Then there were 3 or 4 color guard units and maybe 15 gourd dancers.

It's a first time event for this organization so maybe Saturday will be better. I did see a variety of food booths outside on the plaza area and there are a couple of concession stands open in side the stadium. Most of the stadium is roped off and inaccessible to the public-the bleacher seating is only open on the end where the arena is-so it makes for somewhat of a LONG walk for the smokers-I'm not one of them, but lots of folks were asking where to smoke. And if anyone attempts to wander where they arent' supposed to, there is a large crew of stadium security to redirect them.

Stay tuned for more tommorrow, LOL.

I had to change plans because my 3rd Job needed me Monday and I couldn't get out of it.Since I was stuck here, I called the tabulator and asked if I could volunteer because I didnt' want to just sit around at this pow wow.

I didn't mean to forget Rocky park, I had to get the drum info from the dance contest schedule that I was filling out for the head judge because like I said, the sound was too bad for me to hear what drums were there. Also, it was 4am this morning when i typed that post. My apologies!!

Like Simon on American Idol would say: "the sound was so horrible that I couldn't wait for it all to end"!

What was the committee thinking when they hired the white boyz who had no clue what they were doing? It just put a whole lot of bad taste in my mouth trying to listen to what was going on. Poor MCs were given no justice for their brilliant speaking abilities with the totally inadequate and inexperienced audio engineers. Its unbearable to comprehend what the singers had to deal with and most importantly the dancers who came hundreds and thousands of miles to a first class facility and dang couldn't stand the audio. And all that for $12.00 a person!

The good points were the fantastic stadium, more than enough parking, and the wonderful weather!

I honestly don't think the sound guys were at fault in this situation, i believe it was the acoustics of the stadium. It was made for thousands and thousands of LOUD people to make noise and still hear the announcers of sporting events. Thus the sound went straight up and disappeared in the rafters of the stadium, and the reverb from the drum just hit the empty walls and chairs and bounced back into the arena. It really was awful, I felt quite bad for the dancers on the far side of the arena because they couldnt' hear which beat to dance on.

After attending the powwow from start to finish-3pm on Friday til 9:30pm on sunday (UGGG, LONG STORY!!!) there were lots of issues with the facility, the sound being one of the biggest things. The parking was great because it was free and there was ALOT of it. Overall though, good idea, bad place to have a pow wow, the stadium was just TOO big. There were almost no spectators today, I finally made it to the food vendors outside this afternoon about 3pm and it was like a ghost town. Just a handful of people inside-dancers, singers and their family. I think the fees were just too much for most people.

I did stay til the bitter end just to hear the winners SO, I'll post them next!

2-Cetan thunderhawk
1-Novi smith?

the question marks are where i'm not sure of the spelling or if i got the name right, had to make do with what i could hear. I missed some categories mainly due to the fact that the tabulating seemed to take a great deal of time and winners were being called in groups here and there between 7pm and 9:30pm and at times i wasn't right by my paper and pen. i'm sure someone else can elaborate on the tabulation thing AND fill in the blanks too!

Yes, shocking that his mother was tabulating. Heard they are retabulating at least this category, possibly others as well.
