Phoenix has the best sound man in their back yard, too bad they didn't hire him.

Good Sound never gets any credit, BUT bad sound make your powwow really SUCK!

Yes, Techno, you were there on Friday, any ideas on why the sound was so Bad or what couldve made it better?

I also heard that Phoenix has the best tabulators in their back yard, too bad they didn't hire them, LOL!!! (I'm just kidding, but someone actually used those very same words on Friday to me)

Oh and I think it was Chris P's mother in law and she was more like a "helper", not doing direct tabulation. Someone else actually told me that last night.

The sound just sucks in that joint. I went to see the Rolling Stones and Alice Cooper when they played there a couple few years back. For Alice Cooper, I had no idea what song they were doing until he started singing. The Stones were better but still hard to make stuff out. Now, I was also sitting way up in the nosebleeds so, I wasn't expecting much but, that was hideous.

We went on Friday and sat in the stands, not too far up from the action, facing directly at the MC 'stage'. It didn't sound too bad there. Having never been to a pow wow like that (stadium style), it seemed a little weird. It was more like a event or show than a gathering. Unless people were up around the vendors, you didn't really get to see who was there that you knew. Seemed liked all of my vendor friends were there. 'Spose they need to keep working on that one...

I would also like to go on the record saying that I don't think Tabulation was the major issue with this pow wow-I think it was poor scheduling, an ineffective head staff and an inexperienced pow wow committee.

I haven't gotten around to mentioning any of the other things about the pow wow, both good and bad. One thing that was kind of distressing was the Tiny Tot thing on Saturday night-they had the tiny tots dance and then had no money to pay them-I'm not sure why, if they already paid them in the afternoon or what but they all lined up-what looked like 100 or so, and there wasn't enough money so the MC's were asking people to come forward with dollars to pay them. I'm still not sure if they all got paid or they just gave up and sat down.

Positives-it was indoors and not unbearably hot, a little warm at times but not in the direct sun so that was GREAT, free plentiful parking, lots of clean restrooms with running water, comfortable folding chairs on the stadium floor.

OMG!! That's the funniest thing I've heard lately!!

I can't imagine that any dancers should be indulged with "retabulation" because one of the dancers relative was a helper on the tabulating staff. That does sound like "sour grapes" to me. I know for a fact that she wasn't doing any direct tabulating-anyone watching the tabulators could see that much. Please keep in mind that there were many "volunteers" involved in the tabulating situation this past weekend, Only 2 or 3 people were doing direct adding of numbers and making winners lists. Additionally, the judges on the southern side were not the usual "circuit" judges and that may have had something to do with how the Southern winners turned out.

Jeez, it's Glendale stadium...they should have MORE than enough room to allow EVERYBODY's drums to set up!

Likewise, due to a computer glitch, all the dancer registrations that were faxed into the committee were unavailable, creating a long like of cranky dancers to register.

I was also told that some of the staff were rather rude to the singers as well.

FYI: for those singers/dancers who don't look Indian enough to the commitee, bring your tribal ID or a CDIB.

I'm goin' up with the Rez Riders Tomorrow (about 100 bikes) and I hope things are going a little smoother tomorrow.

I'm going to support my son dancing.
That is too much that only 16 drums were allowed to set up. What would have been the problem in moving the chairs out to allow for more of them? People traveled many miles, spent money to get there and then were unwelcomed? I'm glad I stayed home!

I'm curious: what was the payout like (winners)??

I live in the area but opted out of going. I just wasn't keen on paying THAT much to attend a powwow. Wonder if they're planning on making it an annual thing?

The payout was ALOT-the amounts are listed on the nabihoops.com website, but I"ll post it here, $1100, $700, $500, $300 and $200. Five places in all categories, 42 categories including jrs and teens.

About the drum thing-it wasn't the first 16 drums to set up...

As my post said, when I arrived on site at 3:00pm, I was told that Drum registration was closed after the first 11 drums registered that morning at 10am-I thought it was because they only had day money for 11 drums so I asked and was told it was the decision of the AD Larry Yazzie, so I asked him why only 11 drums allowed and he said, "Because I already set up the chairs for just 11 drums". REALLY. I'm not kidding. I was kind of stunned because there were drums and singers just pulling in who just wanted to sing, they didn't care about the drum money at all. Then about an hour later, he let another drum set up because "We only have 4 southern drums anyway". In the long time I've been pow wowing, that's probably the first time I've heard singers who wanted to sing for free, turned away AND the first time it was the sole decision of one just one of two Arena Director's.

I do believe there were drums from far away who pulled in Friday afternoon and were told they couldn't set up. For the most part, the drums who did get to set up were very local to the PHX area and it would have been nice to hear some drums from other places.

Hummm.... Maybe they didn't have enough chairs???? I guess this is one of those things that hopefully will get worked out, if they have it again next year.

I was talking to a guy at the ASU pow wow, where NABI had a stand set up with their Hummer. He told me it's their goal to become the biggest pow wow in this country, even bigger than GON. Maybe they need to get better spies at GON...

Hmmm...I wonder why? I wonder why people want to have the BIGGEST powwow ever? How about just the BEST powwow, one that people enjoy going to, people will praise and make an effort to get to year after year, that people will talk about all over the country?

I wonder what the criteria is for the BIGGEST pow wow? Most dancers? Largest payout? Largest venue? I kinda don't think powwows were meant to be HUGE, SUPER gatherings.

Naw, if you see a relative up there tabulating and they get first you gotta wonder, as some of these dancers did. And yes, they did tell someone they were going to double check everything and let people know if they found any discrepencies. This kinda stuff happens, why act like it doesn't??
