This is simple:

Non-Federal Cherokee seek the $$$/recognition that Federal Cherokee jealously guard due to greed or fear.

Tell me, again, why the Freedmen were regarded as members until their removal would have made everyone else's slice of the Federal $$$ pie bigger?

Uh huh...

But at least they folded in the face of the BIA as every semi-intelligent person knew that they would... (sigh)

NOT doing so would have opened a Pandora's Box that none of us desire.

Naw it was not greed for with less numbers the tribe actually recieves less money from the Gov
Everybody Assumed that Cherokees Do a Precap or was getting ready to... Thats the sad part
It was not going to happen
No it was for Power...
Flexing there own muscles so to speak look at what I did for the whole thing was all about Self Determination and the Fight with the BIA stemming back to 1975
Chad has been involved with this since that time as the Tribal Attorney and finally as the Chief for 12 years it was his own personal fight with the BIA. He was the one that refused to fix the Constitution crisis that we are still in. That the current council is still debating and refusing to deal with.
Funny thing is the Freedman are what tipped the vote in the favor of Chief Baker he won by over 2000 votes and kept it from another recount oddly enough that is about the number of Freedman that were reinstated.
Crisis averted Echohawk attends the swearing in along with the Chiefs of the other Cherokee Tribes for the first time ever! And all is well in the Cherokee Nation again
We get our Tribal Tags in March when our compact expires with the State. Life is good LOL

No argument, I just equate my "fear" deduction as being very similar to your "power" inference.

I think it's the same motivation.

What is feared? "Loss of power/influence." :)
