Well, if Dennis Zotigh is going to be there, I'll have to go too! Wouldn't want him to not have anyone to MC to.

Now that the rain is over and the winds are blowing, do you expect that we'll be outside on the Main Quad? Or is it still going to be too squishy?

This was a nice little powwow. Three drums set up and a good MC! If anything I say it was short on dancers even though they were paying day money. I think part of the problem was that it was the same day/time as the NCSU powwow which I heard also had somewhat of a shortage of dancers. I think if I was putting this dance on, I'd do one of two things, either change the date/time to allow all dancers to attend or consolidate.

With UNC and ECU using the weekends prior to Duke/NCSU and Easter following, it may be difficult to make a date change. However, one idea might be to turn either Duke or NCSU into an evening dance. This way, folks can go to Duke for the afternoon, make the quick drive over to NCSU and then dance the night away there. As I was leaving the powwow, I actually had someone stop me in the parking lot and ask where the dance was. They were disappointed to hear that it was over. They had been at NCSU and were hoping to catch the Duke dance after dinner. So changing the time might be a viable solution.

The third idea which I personally think is the most interesting, would be to have a Triangle All-University powwow where the native groups from UNC, NCSU, and Duke work together on a single powwow. The location could shift each year so that each campus gets a shot at hosting. By pooling resources there could be more contest $$ or bigger day money however they did it. This will draw more dancers. And since it's the only show in town, one might see more drums showing up much like at NCSSM in February. And here's a twist that I personally like, with so many companies established in RTP, and the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area, it would be a great opportunity try to host a career fair with these companies. This could do two things, 1) allow companies (or their affinity organizations) to come in and talk with native people both new college grads and experienced about their company and any opportunities they may have and 2) by charging a small booth fee, may help to fund the powwow itself. This career fair could be a real win-win for the native community and the companies.

All in all, this year's dance was well organized and I had a great time. There were many activities interspersed with the powwow dancing which I thought were very informative. Oh and thank God for the sun! I've got a great start on my tan :-)

Evening Session huh!...

Well, if you're gonna do all that lets just have a short/small Gourd Session during the day and a War Dance/Pow Wow after the Supper Break!

Keen aye!

First off, sorry that I haven't provided an update sooner! Last week was really hectic- I turned in my masters thesis and then there was all of the excitement of the TARHEELS! So now I am now (almost) a master from the University of National Champions :) Just to clarify, I am a student at Carolina but I have been helping the Duke committee with the powwow the last 2 years.

A sincere thanks to the head staff, dancers, drums, and spectators for coming out on such a beautiful day, enjoying the powwow, and sharing with all of us! I think everyone had a great time. MC Dennis Zotigh kept everyone entertained and informed, and he also sang and drummed a medley of different tribal songs from across North America. It was awesome! The head staff were on point and kept people moving throughout the day. In total, we had 3 drum groups who did an excellent job of providing many different appropriate songs, and I heard several people comment at how impressive it was to see so many young guys on the drum and also providing us with hand drumming! We had about 30 dancers who registered for day money, but I don't know if everyone registered. Daniel Tramper, current senior world champion hood dancer, did 2 exhibitions and made me hope that maybe by his age, I will be in that kind of shape! Dang! Very impressive. The Cherokee ONE dance troupe from the EBCI also presented different tribal dances, which I personally had never seen before and really enjoyed. Willie Lowery had people singing and a few even dancing and took special requests from the audience! The special honorings went well, and the committee kept everyone fed with free Tanka bars and a BBQ dinner afterward.

I have to commend the committee for really taking care of participants; from the food and drinks, sunscreen, and toiletries in the dressing rooms to the free powwow t shirts given out during the giveaway, the Duke Committee did a great job of making people feel welcome.

It is too bad that the State and Duke powwows conflicted, and hopefully this will not happen next year. Last year, the Duke powwow was earlier, but space was not available on that same day. But, there are only so many weekends in the year, and the fact that the Indian community in NC can support two powwows on the same day speaks to the strength of the community. I'm from Massachusetts, and I don't think that two simultaneous powwows in New England would end up with 3+ drums at each powwow.

In terms of the suggestions, thanks for the feedback! I imagine it would be hard to have an inter-school powwow because university powwow funding, to my knowledge, pretty much always comes with the requirement that the event be held on the campus and open to the student body. Remember that one of the main goals of a university powwow is to show the presence of the Indian community both on campus and in the surrounding area! The powwow was during Duke's recruitment, so it was awesome to have prospective students and their families on campus on tours and seeing the powwow and the Indian presence on the Main Quad! When I was an undergrad, we looked into having an inter-Ivy League powwow, but the problem of getting funding for an off campus event was the main obstacle. It would be cool to have representatives from RTP companies come. As far as having a second session...you never know. Keep in mind this was only the 2nd annual! It would be great to have a longer powwow, but that's probably something to build up to.
