Then come out to ASU during 4/17-19 - i would be very interested in your point of view.

Finally come out to the University of Phoenix stadium on May 1-3 for the last major powwow event before summer here in the valley.
I'd love to get out to Page, as I've had it on my list for a while. However, I think the next one after finally unpacking will be the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Memorial Day?

I'm looking at my calendar, and since I am now in the Phoenix area, I likely won't be going to the Selma Walker Memorial Pow Wow in Hilliard, OH this year.

Does anyone know of a Memorial Day weekend pow wow in Arizona or just over the border nearby?

Thanks in advance gang!

Winners posted

FYI, the Ft. McDowell Casino has the winners posted on their website under Pow Wow. I don't know how to copy the winners list from Adobe Acrobat.

Finally looked over the winners list. WOW! I'm really amazed at some of those winners, considering the other dancers in the categories. But I guess it was a judging thing. I'm waiting for the day when someone has the time to post ALL the dancers in a category so we all know who was dancing against who, LOL.

Just like sports commentating-so we can get the highlights and not just the scores.

My daughter won the jr. adult southern cloth....and when i looked at the winners in that category, they were all old school cloth dancers. no rhinestones, just beadwork and nice ribbonwork dresses. And except for ponkawe, they all had just fully beaded moccasins on with their skirts, no leggings or anything fancy. Poncas and otoes won that one. Those same girls you will see at WhiteEagle, Otoe, just about any oklahoma pow wow......And in mine, it was old school for the first three places. Cheryl, then me, then amber...and we are all from back in the day...lol....

Well, there were 5 places in each category, and I get whats being said about the first 3 places in the categories that you named, I think winners means ALL the dancers who placed in that category. Last time I checked, Rashawn Morgan wasn't Ponca or Otoe-(NO OFFENSE Rashawn!!!), AND she's a jingle dress dancer usually, LOL. So, I wouldn't exactly say "all old school cloth dancers".

But I also meant Jr. Men's southern straight, Jr. Women's Fancy, Jr. Women's Buckskin, Jr. Men's southern fancy. I didn't really mean women's southern cloth Jr or Sr. winners were strange, except I don't remember Leah tying with Sharon? I thought Leah tied with someone else.

My point was, that the winners were just not what's usually expected and I believe it can be attributed to the judges that were used.

I thought the southern winners were pretty much on how they danced....and yeah, the majority of judges were from oklahoma so the winners were from oklahoma. I watched the men dance on sunday and it was all good dancing and good singing for them...and yes, sharon and leah tied. I thought tanski danced extremely well myself...and novie...but i wasnt judging. lol

yikes....i know...some of the face paint jobs were a little on the wild side....i think novie smith is one of the young men's traditional that carries that old school look well. . .i dont know, that face painting was kind of the thing of the 90's..like when schemitzen had that contest for contemporary face painting...It all depends on the judges when it comes to contest dancing and what they like to see and how they choose their winners. And I agree with your choice on men's traditional. Its just what style you prefer.
