It's all fun and games until people start thinking those were actual traditional Native dances, (and we face enough misconceptions as it is, do we not?)

Good point.

That said, as politely as I can put it, folks ALREADY BELIEVE powwows contain "traditional Native dances."

That whole pop-and-lock, stutter step, half timed Fancy Dance thing comes straight from 1984.

These videos are several years old and i have seen conversations here & on different websites bashing them before.

Somewhere i read an explanation for this and it was a just fun time thing as part of a pow-wow. Along the lines of potato dance. I've been to pow-wows before where they have played current music and had people dance to modern music.

It was for fun & a good laugh.

this just goes to show you what direction our cultural is headed into the future..i have no problem with hip hop, rap, heavy metal, ect..but when u mix it with what we just saw..to me is very disrespectful..im 35 and like everyone else i enjoy different kinds of music but lets leave this stuff out of the arena be it east, west, north or south coast..come on people this is not good...

This past weekend the sound guy started to play powwow music remixed with a rap / hip hop beat. The vocals were even like "Autontuned". It just sounded so dumb and was just an overall bad mix. We all looked at each other with a look of confusion on our faces.

Have you heard any of the stuff Robby Robertson does that was even used at the Salt Lake City Olympics?

In many ways, it's the same thing.

So, what's the rub? The music? The circle?

What about if, during a two-step, the Head Singer slips in a 49 song with English words? Are we going to go protest?

It's just not that big of a deal. If someone is bothered, they can just choose to not dance.

@Zeke I should have been more clear in my statement. The music I was referring to was played while people were still setting up and not during the actual powwow itself. I was just pointing out that it sounded terrible.

I didn't watch the SLC Olympics so I'm not familiar with what he did there. I did do a quick search for stuff on YouTube and found the song he did for that event. It sort of reminded me of Enigma. The difference was that the song he wrote for them had the purpose of fitting into the theme of the SLC Olympics. The mix was also decent.... The stuff I'm referring to above was a terrible attempt to "remix" powwow music that was recorded for powwows. It might have sounded better if it was recorded with the intent of being a hip-hop song(s).

to me: i would say if folks want to dance to hip hop that is fine SO LONG as it is done else where. there is a time and place for it. in the the arena (dance circle) is not the place.

I call B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T.

You can't call something a "dance circle" then get mad and judge how/why people dance. If the arena is for dancing, by definition it is the place for it to occur.

What if the Head Singer starts one of those thirty year old Alvin Ahoy-Boy chipmunks songs, or if someone starts a War Mother song or uses -- without permission -- a family song, out of context?

Are we supposed to become outraged at the perceived offense?

1. Powwows are NOT traditional.
2. The arena is for dancing.
3. If you find something offensive, don't dance.

Here's the rub: you can't call a powwow inter-tribal then get mad about who shows up and you can't have an arena for dancing then get upset about dancing.

It's just hypocritical.

part of things is what did the committee say about doing hip-hop dancing in the arena/dance area? if a ommittee says not in the area, but allows it elsewhere, then its fine. if they allow it, then no problem.

i was only giving an opinion. don't mad at an opinion
