SW Navajo was DUSTY AS MUDDER FUKKER!!!!!!! Went there only cuz I had to work on saturday and a couple of (2) of the guys were the only ones around so we went and took first there.........Sun Eagle jrs. took 2nd and Sacred Nation took third........the nice thing about this powwow was that the Jack family came out and they had a special of sorts done for them which was cool.......average amount of Dancers for this powwow..........

On friday night it was cold. Saturday afternoon it was dusty and windy. By the time I got home and took my braids out I had dirt in my hair that I could shake out. Saturday night was cold with calm winds. And Sunday was nice, lite breeze.

Sky City was dusty as Heck Saturday afternoon and sorta dusty Sunday afternoon. The evenings were nice. "Why come" they don't pave that big parking lot????? Sky City can afford it. There were a bunch of trucks parked there Saturday and Sunday.

Had fun just hanging out and visiting. Good singing......

The contest was a bust. Head man took second in his category. Plus when head man messed up they gave him another song. Specials were done at will, with no prior notices. Initiations of kids (toddlers) into the circle, why? don't know but still I went and honered them. The MC kept on saying "We reserve the right to change any part of the powwow" Which meant We can do what ever our family, er, we want to. I did great, but, I took third behind the headman (double payday for that "doot"". It wasn't fair but I couldn't do anything about it.
On the other hand.
The gourd dance was GREAT! very progressive, y'know, started off slow then cruised along then ended with some mustangs. Man was that a good session. Gourd drum was Dzil something. That was the only best part of this powwow.
Think next year I'll skip this one.

i like your reports tiyo.. this aint excuses.com and its neat that you dont avoid some of the smaller way out of the way powwows, and ummdancing for a few bucks. lets see there was chinle, towoc and sw fair. i think you should get some kind of *hard charger* award. either that or you enjoy getting sand blown where the sun dont shine.

OMG, the wind kicked my a$$. But overall, I had fun cuz I got to see my family again. 50 ended up getting super sick from the wind and I ate nothing but sand burgers, coffee with sand sugar, Steak sandwiches, (you get the idea). The only complaint I had was for tiny tots on Saturday evening. They invited all tiny tots to dance and only awarded the kids in regalia. Soooo, I decided to sponsor it next year. That's if I don't decide to go to Soboba next year. It wasn't so cold like I thought it would, but we are done with the rez fairs. I was honored during the gourd session, it was nice of my yazh, the head gourd dancer.

I survived class this morning, barelly with some expresso.

Now you can be a reporter for all the powwows you go to. Remember to include the drum winners and all the drums that showed up!

I went to Sky City Powwow all weekend. Now that powwow was fun!!! No complaints but the wind and dust plus the coldness from the nite! Yuck!! I think they should plant grass and trees to avoid the dust for next year. You can't avoid the cold at nite, so its best to bring jackets, lucky i came prepared. lol But overall, the powwow rocked! It was the best Sky City powwow i attended from all the years it has been happening. 21 drum groups attended, and they all sounded good. Mountain Soul was totally rocking! YB sounded great and the dancing was good. I really liked seeing Jazz Bearstail. lol... of all the times i seen him dance, this was his best!! The old style jingle special was good. I liked Mountain Soul's side step song they sang. What about Jay Begays hand drum contest??? lol now that was dang cool. I liked how he got everyone singing on Sunday afternoon. Instead of intertribals, they had round dancing happen. The powwow ended at a decent time and they paid the winners right there instead of sending them inside of the casino or something. Oh yeah, the closing songs by Southern Outlawz and Mountain Soul were cool. I plan on going again next yr since this powwow happens close to home! lol
