Loaning your outfit

I used to loan parts of my dance outfit to people who I thought would wear them in a good way and bring them back. But I have been burned several times. I have lost two good roaches and a full set of beadwork. I have almost lost a third roach and had to go out of my way to the persons house to retrieve it back. The people who have not returned my borrowed items avoid me now. Hmmm?

What stories do you have about loaning your dance clothes out?

Do you still loan parts of your dance outfit out?

Just for that very reason I do not loan out my stuff. IF I do and it is a huge if ,I had no problem getting what ever it was back. In fact they brought it rite back after the dance. I have heard to many stories about either not getting it back or when it does come bck it looks like its been threw a war. NOt at all one would expect for someone who should know better and take very good care of a borrowed item.

AWWWW, BUMMER!!!!!!

The only thing I have ever loaned is a shawl, and it came right back to me. But they were close family.

Throughout my life I've loaned regalia to relatives and friends, usually without any negative incidents. A few years ago I was routinely loaning entire sets of regalia to a friend. It sort of puzzled me when people would ask if I had given it to her or if it was loaned. Others outright said I shouldn't do it. Last year I noticed a set of hairties had been "modified"--and not what I would have done myself--so that ended the loaning. I then gifted two dresses to her, one I'd made myself and another that I had purchased in an auction. In my heart I've always felt for people who wanted to dance but didn't have the family or resources to support their efforts so I've tried to help out whenever I could, especially if the person was trustworthy and respectful. I have made all of my outfits which has taken the last 25 years so I do treasure them. Only when you've made your own regalia do you realize how time-consuming and expensive it is, and fortunate "borrowers" should never take it for granted.

Always ask for something expensive as a deposit, and make a short written agreement.

They don't come back with your stuff, or you stuff is messed up - they forfeit their deposit.

The ripoff artists never go for this, so you eliminate 99% of the problem people up front.

I have loaned out a few things but its usually stuff I have in duplicate, But I am careful for I have heard of lots of horror stories!

Last weekend I loaned out my old set of mescal bandoliers to a young man that had grown out of his (he is 6 ft. tall)... But when I saw how well they fit him I gave them to him after the dance!! After all they would have just sat in my cedar box and his old set he had out-grown he gave to his younger brother Problem Solved!!!

Loaned my fancy bustles and they came back with two broken spikes and some flaggings were all stuck together with soda pop. Lent my awesome rocker out and never saw again.

I gave away my grass outfit from back in the day to a kid who didn't have the money to make his own. Run in to the kid once in a while and he's doing very good.

Usually I loan a shawl that comes back to me. If I do loan any other items of regalia it is to someone I know that would treat my stuff as I would treat mine. Mainly "close' close friends and family.

We have NEVER had good luck loaning things out. You might as well just be giving them away for that person to do whatever they want with...give to someone else, keep, or pawn.

I loaned a little girl's mom a whole outfit for her and never got it back. The mom kept it and it fits her granddaughter now. By rights, my granddaughters should be wearing it!!

Most stuff loaned to relatives has ended up in hock.

Even things loaned to good friends have come back in poor shape - moldy leggings, ripped out mocs, fringe shredded on shawls.

Once I saw someone wearing my daughter's nice fur braidties. I went up and told them that I wanted them back after the powwow. She felt so guilty that she took them off right then and there.

I also had to retrieve a loaned dress that someone put in the local fair as one that they made. Sheesh!!

I just wish I knew what pawn shop some of the other stuff ended up in, so I could get it back.
