Lightbulb Medical Marijuana and the Gathering of Nations

I just listened to Native American Calling. During this radio program, it was announced that the Gathering of Nations is going to be sponsored by Ultra Health, a manufacturer of medical marijuana, for the next 5-years.

How do you feel about this?

Good move or bad?

I read that along with the sponsorship, Ultra Health has been given naming rights & they are officially changing GON to be "Ultra Health Gathering of Nations".

While neither party disclosed the exact payment for this sponsorship, it was reported that both said, "It was in the 6 figures."

Then I read marketing spin that Derek Matthews thinks this sponsorship "is a great fit" given that Native people have a long history with natural healing and the use of herbal remedies.

Following that logic, maybe Mr. Matthews should ask opiate drug companies to be additional sponsors of GON??? Opium is a natural herbal remedy...right?

I think as NDN people we have had such a long painful history of struggling to overcome alcohol & drug abuse in our families & communities that we don't need to pursue medical marijuana as the next cash crop (e.g. easy answer to tribal economic development.)

My mother used to say, "Just because you can make money doing something, doesn't mean you should do it."

This bothers me on several levels.

First, the entire medical marijuana industry is based on claims that lack significant scientific evidence. In part because of the schedule one classification of marijuana, proper double-blind studies of the medical applications are thin on the ground. Most of the claims are anecdotal at best. I imagine the psychotropic effect of THC reenforce any panacea effect, which for certain conditions could be useful, but we need more data before we unleash another mind-altering substance into out society.

Second, is cultural. Most medicine people prohibit participation by individuals under the influence of mind-altering substances in ceremony - including in some cases prescription drugs. Powwow posters routinely declare their events are drug and alcohol free. Now, a marijuana producer is sponsoring one of these events. Mixed-messages. It's no different from taking a beer companies money.

Third, our communities are viewed through the lens of dysfunction by the dominant culture. How many times have you tried to discuss issues of prejudice, stereotyping, or disproportionate representation within the legal system with members of the larger society only to have them shut down the conversation by pointing to the problems within our communities? Diana Sawyer's poverty porn to Aaron Huey's gang fetishizing, our homelands are depicted -- correctly and incorrectly -- as blighted places, full of broken people. This becomes the sum total of the dominant culture's perception of modern Indians. I fear when the larger community looks at this, they see stoner Indians taking money from the pusher.

A powwow that will be full of potheads and giving out dimebags as prizes to contest winners.

I still have no interest in going to GON. Good luck with that powwow.

I don't have anything against medical marijuana after seeing the results of it vs other treatments, but I don't think this is a good move for the reasons already mentioned. People already see reservations as drug / alcohol ghetto type places and it doesn't look good when our biggest pow wow is sponsored by marijuana manufacturers. It would look equally bad if it were sponsored by nyquil. Medications and medicine are not the same thing and I don't necessarily think they need to be mixed together on a scale like this.

It seems some people need to do more research on medical marijuana. A majority of strains have been altered so that there is no THC in them. Having been in the medical field for 20 years, I've seen prior treatments vs medical marijuana treatment. I've had various friends and family on it for everything from cancer, my sister in law has stage four colon cancer, to glaucoma. The positive effects had nothing to do with THC, it contained none. I know vets dying from stage four cancers being told the VA will drop them if they use it. People in so much pain the have morphine pumps, yet marijuana works. I have severe pain issues. I'm also allergic to Opoids, not that they help. Unfortunately I get my care from the VA. People with real health issues, marijuana can be a lifesaver. Or make death less painful, and more dignified. Instead of looking at this as negative, try and make it a platform for acceptance. They might be the sponsor but that doesn't mean GON can't request non THC marijuana be used for the duration. Try and make a positive out of the sponsorship. It's not going away. Use it to change people's perceptions

Cannabidiol. The plant does not have the tetrahydracannabinol (sp).

There are many medical uses. My Grandma would make a tea for my little brother, who had asthma, using the stems of the marijuana plant. This was over 50 years ago. I use it with pure cane alcohol. I guess it would be considered a tincture.

Our vets need all the help they can get. Take away the classification and make it available to them.

This is a can of worms. I'm still pretty new to the arena. I would like to point out that My first step into the arena had nothing to do with the need for prize money or the concern for finding a sponsor.
You know it's funny... Sometimes it feels like our lives (My family and I) are so bogged down with all these worries. We have to get good grades and pay bills. It becomes us. It feels as though we have to fight to take the time we need just to remember who we are. Powwow helps me to do just that. I don't care about sponsors. I don't care about prize money.

In my mom's tribe there is an old story. I apologize to anybody in advance if I don't remember it right, as I have been known to get things wrong.

"A long long time ago the first people hunted too much. They killed more than what they would use, and they became ungrateful for the animals who they hunted. When the spirits of those animals crossed over they spoke with creator. They said "Those people are killing us for fun. their hearts are bad!" So Creator listened to them, then the first people became sick. That was the first time sickness came. After a time, the plants saw that the first people were suffering and dying and they felt bad. They went to Creator and said "Those people are suffering! We want to help them!" So creator listened to the plants and put medicine in them."

I have been working in the medical field, specializing in emergent medicine since 2007. I have worked in the ambulance, as well as 5 years in critical care in the hospital. Morphine (Chemically the same as heroin) is a good thing sometimes. So are stimulants, even cocaine! which is now used as a local anesthetic. These, and many others have been used to help good people stay alive and alleviate suffering in my experience, more times than I can count! I don't use marijuana. I believe medical marijuana itself is a good thing, even if it's often misused. Money itself is often misused, but would we be able to enjoy our dances without it?
