Metis and Mestizos

If Metis (French/Indian of Canada) and Mestizos (Tribes of south of the US border) are Natives and aboriginal to North America, can they compete in Powwows?

What if a powwow questions their tribal heritage?

What if they don't carry tribal cards?

metis people do have cards stating that they are metis - i know a couple of people who have them. but it can be kinda hard to get one for some ppl ... there are metis settlements and such. other than that i don't really know any more

in canada there isn't really a issue with "proving" you are native - like in the states (tribal id's and such). they just kinda make sure your in the right age category .. lol.

Would if they call mixture a Mestizo and Metis people if they married and started another tribe?

United Metizios of Americanos?

It might happen. Anything can happen.

I have seen both Metis and Mestizos dancing at powwows. I have danced with friends who are both north and south of the US border (Mike LaLiberty/Metis) and (Tony Sacone/Mestizo).

For some reason, neither one of them contested in their division, but both carried in flags during the grand entry (two separate powwows).

Go figure?

NPW,

I agree. But at these particular powwows, I was a visitor and had no say so.

Through observation, I have seen that it is okay to let other tribes "represent" until,

They start winning dance or singing contests.

Then for some reason - it becomes NOT okay, to some people.

LOL Are you sure it was a Mestizo? Not eveyone in Mexico is a Mestizo lol well according to the census..Mexico is 15% Full Blooded Native, 60-80%? Mestizo? And another 15% of Mestizos carry more Indigenous blood so

Full Blooded 15% + Cholos(High Indigneous Mestizos) 15% = 30% O_O

I think this is based of the assumption that each country has the same standards and ways of identifying native people as the US. Native populations exist throughout the entire continent. Many of which continue to speak thier own languages fluently. Just because their governments never established reservations or tribal IDs don't make natives from Mexico, Central and South America any less native than US natives..

i lived in Guatemala for 2 years. i learned to speak spanish there. i work with many latinos here in the U.S.

"INDIO" or Indian is a derogatory/racist word used by latinos. its common for latinos, brown skinned people, to use this word to put down someone who they view as ill-mannered, uneducated, or lower class, or even more dark skinned.

i think the Metis in canada have a "native" culture...its developed into a native identity.

"spanish" influence in latin america changed it from native american to "spanish" in culture. you're native if you're from one of the indigenous tribes down there but in my experience mestizos distance themselves very quickly from an indigenous identity.

Word! The colonial days of the racial caste system in the Latino countries left behind an attitude against the indigenous tribal people.

One saying often heard is "No Seas Indio!" (Don't be like an Indian) Literal words. In translation: Get off the warpath! This saying in Spanish is used when somebody is arguing loudly against another person.

Attitudes…left over from the past...

Can they compete in powwows? (and I know you know the answer, you good-topic-creator, you!) :)

They can compete according to the rules of the powwow they are attending. If the powwow requires a card or 1/4 blood degree and they are carrying the documentation, fine.

If not, visit with the committee about changing that rule. (But don't expect any change )

If the powwow doesn't require that, contest away!

But I see lots of folks that are perfectly content just dancing intertribals.
