Mul Chu Tha Fair Pow Wow, Sacaton, AZ

Just in case anyone who was at ASU (or elsewhere) wants to know the scoop...
the WEATHER was fabulous, thankfully the dance was under a tent so with the breeze blowing through at 2pm, it wasn't painfully hot!! The Drums were: Pumpkin vyne (SH), Preying Eagle (NH), New circle, Sun Bear, Ramblers, Thunderboy, Greasewood Boys-I think that's all of them.

Winners that I caught, the list was read really fast so i missed alot of the men's winners:
Womens' fancy: 3rd-Alecia New Moon, 2-Denise g, 1-Shamaray Lilttle child
Jingle-3-Raeshawn morgan, 2-Kelly etsitty, 1-Maureen king
Southern Tradish-3-Yolanda Frenchman, 2-Mete Moore, 1-Raetava yazzie
Northern-3-Nicole Phillips, 2-Jshen tsosie, 1-maurissa two two
Golden Age-3-elaine new moon, 2-Winnie Mendivil, 1-Yolanda Two two

Men's:
straight-3-David Yazzie, 2-Paul stewart, 1-Ryland Jim
Grass- 3, ? 2-? 1-Andrew Windyboy
Northern tradish-3-?, 2-chance sherman, 1-Toby Jose
fancy-???? i think Lydall got 1st
golden age-???

despite the couple of low points-high admission cost, traffic on 1-10, questionable winners, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else!!

LOL!! They probably wouldn't be questionable to you Paul!!

So far, I'm hearing from people who went to ASU, "I shoulda went to Sacaton"!!! First place at ASU was only $275, it used to be $300...with the admission cost, frybread stand and vendor booth prices I wonder why the money went down and not up?

The powwow (as well as the Rodeo, Battle of the Bands, Wailia contests, etc.) ballots, books, and tabluation sheets are open to inspection by the general public. Bring a photo ID.

The records will be available for up to 2 years (?) at The Gila River Governance Office at 525 W. Gu U Ki, Sacaton, AZ 85247.

All winners were chosen by independent, non-relative judges (as far as can be determined), and judges were chosen by a 3rd party with no competing relatives, and different judges were recruited for different occasions (No two judges were the same between judging 1 and 2, nor for tie-breakers).

Back home, it has been said that the Ojibwe elders were very against contest dancing, and would just rather see all dancers, singers, and other participants just be ALL paid out equally, fed, showered, provided with some commodities, instead of the Eurocentric competition practice, that begins by placing some "ABOVE" others, which is not our way. The elders said something like: "If you bring money into the powwow, it will create machimanitoog (bad spirits) and can even make enemies out of good friends and relatives.

Too bad both the events had to fall on the same weekend...however, the elders really wanted to bring the Mul Chu Tha back to the original time it was held back until the 1970s, when they changed it to the end of January. It's just too cold for the elders to get out and participate in the winter. The elders deserve to have their wishes met, since they are the ones now who live having iunvested their lives into the community.

I've gone to Lee's powwow for about 20 years, so I miss that too, ASU is MY Alma Mater.

back to basics people, people go to pow wows to enjoy themselves, socialize, observe, listen, and forget about everyday hectics of life. it doesnt matter what dance you went to all these things happened at each pow wow. many people enjoyed both events.

are you kidding? Who's crying over $25? First place at Mul Chu Tha was $400. You're right, EVERYONE should know ASU is not a big prize money powwow, that's only one it's downfalls, LOL!!! Considering A. the head staff, B. how many times you have to contest, C. the parking situation, D. the cost to get in E. the ONE food booth, and F. the "iffy" tabulating, I'm not surprised that everyone i've talked to said " I shoulda went to Mul chu tha".

KUDOS by the way to the Mul chu tha committee for getting up the COMPLETE WINNERS LIST and PICTURES within 24 hours of the pow wow ending. Wouldn't it be nice if all powwows could be so thorough????

C and E are just things you gotta deal with, so I cant help you there...lol...but I would like to know more about the others...

Skybird5 - you are absolutely nervy. I get tired of reading your posts because you are always criticizing every pow-wow that you don't tabulate or have a hand in. Give us all a break. I've read post after post where you tear down powwows, committee and personally attack people (Morongo). I've been to ASU a few times and have always enjoyed myself. The committee works hard to provide a nice dance. When have you ever chaired a powwow? Stop the bs and try being a positive person. Who made you the expert?

Thanks...i have a suggestion, stop reading them, LOL!!! This thread didn't start out criticizing anything. I was posting basic info from a powwow, I never said ASU's committee didn't work hard, as a matter of fact in another thread just last week I pointed out that i think ASU is one of the best run college powwows. Didn't catch that thread huh?
Me thinks I'm not the ONE who's nervy, LOL.

Didn't catch that thread huh?
Me thinks I'm not the ONE who's nervy, LOL.
Yep, I went back and read the ASU thread and you managed to give a few kudos AFTER my remarks about you as a nay sayer. As I said, I've read enough of your posts to think you are nervy and a whiner. You apparently enjoy tearing people up (both individuals and committees). Shame on you. Who the heck ever made you an expert?

Nope you read the wrong thread. i did post on the ASU thread AFTER your remarks but that's not the thread I was talking about originally. IT was called College Pow wows. Not that it matters now but I'm so thoroughly amused by how easily one can "tear" into me and stoop to name calling because I'm honest and don't sugar coat the world of pow wows. And I don't believe that I ever point fingers at individual people unless they've started pointing fingers at me. Further, I'm absolutely certain that I've never stooped to name calling of anyone on this forum.

I have been attending pow wows for 39 years, in every way, shape and form. I have a pow wow resume of "paid jobs" that is two pages long. I have worked on pow wow committees, chaired pow wow committees, volunteered at pow wows, been on the head staff as a paid member, I've danced and sang at powwows. I don't think one could be any more "expert" than that. Remember, I never called myself an "expert"-you did, I believe I have the experience and knowledge to be able to say when an event is successful and/or what could be done to make it better.
