Weird line up of contests- no 'grouping' of like 'all juniors', 'teens', 'adults': they would have an adult category THEN have a junior category, etc. etc. AND they have the nerve to CHANGE THE DATE to the same weekend as Avi Casino pow-wow outside of Laughlin NV- a family oriented/ community based pow-wow NOT out for PROFIT. I suggest EVERYONE go to Avi- an awesome indoor, maintained dance arena, FREE admission, FREE refreshments for dancers: coffee, water, soda, iced tea and pastries in the mornings. CHEAP rates at the hotel- ask for the pow-wow or tribal rate. Plenty of FREE parking and PROFESSIONAL TABULATORS! GO TO AVI!!!!

NABI has hired "Professional Tabulators" for your information.

knows,

So an "open drum" that wants to sell their CDs has to fork over $300 at the beginning of the powwow?

Hmmmmm?

Alright folks, i've been quiet for too long about this one, so here it goes:
I honestly don't believe that this year's NABI pow wow is gonna be any more successful than last year's. Yes, last year was NOT GOOD and although there was PLENTY of room for improvement, it didn't happen, so I would expect that this year's event will be just as bad.
I'd also like to add that my tabulating partner and I were contacted to submit a bid for this event, as were other pow wow "professionals" (TT jump in anytime) and due to the fact that the committee folks don't seem to have a CLUE about anything but publicizing the name NABI in the name of Natives in Arizona and taking money for it-my partner and I declined the bid submission. I just couldn't in good conscience participate in an event that so clearly ISNT about pow wowing as much as it is about money. Furthermore, I just didn't want to work with the Pow wow Coordinator, who I firmly believe was at least 50% responsible for last year's disaster as he was the Arena Director. (Not Robin).
I think that attempting to have a pow wow of this size in Az on the date they chose, just proves that if the organizers had the best intentions of the pow wow folks in mind WHY would they choose the 3rd weekend in February, when everyone in AZ knows that AVI is that weekend and the Gila River community will be hosting their annual Ira Hayes event, which many of us enjoy attending. And anyone who lives in AZ knows that the Winter is our tourist season, so hotel rooms and travel rates are sky high at this prime time of the year. Furthermore, why would they choose such inappropriate AND pricey venues to have these events-since the price thing trickles down to the dancers, singers and their family members all having to pay to get in. THey only used 1/4 of the stadium, they'll probably only use 1/2 of the arena, so why go BIG and expensive when they could have gone smaller and free?
And why is the entire head staff from somewhere else? Why not have one or two local folks on the head staff-a local MC and/or a local arena director? Arizona has a lot of Natives and alot of Native events, we have a large group of people to choose from who could perform these tasks.

I could go on and on, but i've undoubtedly listed enough here for some of you all to scream at or agree with. I don't even want to get started on the Drum group selling CD's thing...LOL

i went to this powwow last year and it was all right.. you are right there was alot of problems there.. that was there first powwow and from the looks of it i think they did a lot of things to fix it this year. now you blame the A.D for the mess up but is that why they hire you to keep score.. the A.D does his job, the singing judge does his thing and you are suppose to do your job. the powwow was fine until the end. the scores was screwed up. i went to check my point and the people who was tabulating was very nasty to me. there was a few poeple up there to check the points out but we got ran off.. i think the head staff that they got for this year along with a new points keeper will make the powwow alot better.. but i guess we will have to wait and see. you know many of you are not being forced to go to this powwow, if you want to go somewhere else by all means go rite ahead.... as for non local headstaff...by lookin at the poster, seems like there from everywhere, which i think would make a very interesting and a fair powwow for everybody......

I agree.....those who choose another powwow by all means gooo. And to metion that the tabulator position was only offered to select tabulators with no affilation with anyone who did the powwow last year. Thats improvement. Knowing this this would definately either please those who win or oppose those who loose. Its not up to them or to even change the votes, i believe this is even an open book. If anything it will be up to the judges who are selected to judge the competition.
I would also like to comment on the coordinators, im glad there are two coordinators its seems that this balance check is an improvement. And a powwow this size needs two coordinators to keep everything fair. (look at what happened last year)
And the whole thing w/the powwow CDs is that the stadium has rights to what and who sales at this and any other event that happens there....I called complaining.
As for the cost....with the type of money paid out to the winners, and to compare this to the Gatherings. I dont think it compares to spend 10-15 dollars. I have been saving to get my family in,,,,,and so should you. You can find holtels early and get cheaper rates....i did. And anyone from the area shouldnt complain, what if this powwow ends to your negative comments. Then we as powwow people will have to go to powwows like Avi....who dont have split adult age catogories. Im glad that the age is at 40-65, because those older actually have a change also. It goes both ways, but respect to the elder is better ...right. And the respect to those who are running the powwow because they are the one working harder to uplift what was done to this powwow last year. Its a huge job to coordinate something this big.
Now the date issue....please im glad there is a bigger powwow in Feb....why not? And with all the issues of having local headstaff...well I know who the winner would have been, and I dont think thats fair to those who travel from afar. Reality check----local staff local winners..right.
Again....If you need to go to Avi go to Avi, stop complaining sounds like your never happy with anything.

wow with so much negativity here, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't meet everyones expectations......if you want to go, go....why listen to other people tell you their opinions about something they obviously have a problem with.....if you don't like it this year, then don't bother coming back. Simple as that.

Hmmmmm?
The way the info. reads off their website (2010 "CHASING THE SUN" POW WOW INFO), drums competing pay a $100 registration fee. If they wish to sell CD's, they also must pay the committee, at the time of registration (which would be Thursday evening or Friday morning), an additional $100 Vendors fee, AND must show proof of purchase of a City of Glendale Sales Permit (which they have to have applied for, purchased, and have had issued to them in the days prior to arriving to register for the pow wow.)

Now to your question about the open drums not competing: if they want to sell their CD's, they have to have completed all the City of Glendale permit requirements AND must pay the committee a $200 vendors fee at registration. I assume if they are not competing they do not have to pay the $100 registration fee. That's the way it reads off the info. on the website.

It maybe best to assume "the worst case scenario" as far as what your drum is going to have to pay overall. It also states very specifically that any drums caught selling CD's without City of Glendale permits and unpaid vendor fees will be removed from the stadium and will face possible fines from the City.

I think all the info. speaks for itself as to whether a drum group is going to want to, or not, participate.

Nice to see the age breakdowns back to the where they were last year. Hate to keep the negativity flowing, but a observation. It seems they took out 5th place out of the categories, where I believe there was 5 places last year. Or am I imagining that. Does that mean their gonna have a 5th place?

As for drum fees, like the dancers if they wish to compete in the contest it's their choice to pay then compete. That is why we have host drums. We know that if it weren't for the drums, we wouldn't be able to have our dances, ceremonies, & celebrations. Some competition powwows, dancers have a registration fee while the drum contest may not have a registration fee. Some dances have the admission fee to get in & that is their registration fee. I believe Denver March has drum fees for registration & a city permit to sell cds.

My aunt & uncle went to this dance, said they enjoyed it. Except for a couple things, some that were mentioned & some that were not. Sound was not good until they opened the roof. Registration problems, tabulations, etc. My aunt & uncle were lucky enough to place & were paid by check & had to go to check cashing place a few miles away to cash checks for a small fee. Don't know if head staff & others were paid that way. Hope he wasn't exaggerating.

NABI just barely getting off the ground, people have a lotta complaints & concerns. Hope for their success. And hope I can make it that way. If not, hopefully a live webcast would be cool. It's one to put on powwow wish list to attend & compete.

Avi powwow is a good one as well, been to that one. Whichever powwow people choose to go, be grateful that you're able to go, just go & enjoy the dance.

It's so easy to just say, if you don't like it, don't go...but my point is, I want to go, I want to sing with my good friends and visit with people, I just don't think I or anyone should have to pay $30 to sing with my friends and visit. I could register as a dancer and pay $10, heck, last year i VOLUNTEERED all friday night so I could get a wristband to get in free. But i think it throws off the books when people register to get in and aren't dancing-LOTs of people did that last year and it gave inflated dancer numbers.

Yes, I have first hand knowledge of the committee so I'm not just talking off the top of my head. And yes, the arena director last year IS the Pow Wow Coordinator this year-and his friend is the other pow wow coordinator-that he brought last year to do his "running around". Seriously. Um, I thought the job of Arena Director means you do alot of running around, that's why you're getting paid the big bucks LOL.

It is somewhat interesting that the NABI folks seem to think it's ok to change things once they've been publicly posted though-so if enough people complain about something, they'll change it? That must be a first in the history of any pow wow.

In any event's infancy there are going to be some glitches. Even though, last year's shindig didn't meet some people's expectations, myself included, it was a success. If you count the foundations objective: providing our youth a venue to showcase their talents on the basketball courts and fields. Just maybe they caught a college recruiter's eye or received scholarship and are fulfilling their dreams playing college ball. So I again will pay my admission fee for this cause. Of course NABI maybe being funded by other sources. Let's help our youth however small way we can.
keyword here is youth.

Think outside the box, People. I just did. lol

To tell people to go elsewhere...hmmm Yeah there are other events planned and to be attended. Have fun whichever direction you go.

Big thanks to Mark, Gina, all tribes and organizations involved.

No, I am not affiliated with this organization.

Let's sing, dance and visit.

LOL..thats funny, the AD comment on how he didnt work the arena. LOL I didnt notice that but I heard a few people joking about that.
Age group splits are better, i just wish they would separate cloth and buckskin. Its considered a southern pow wow, being in AZ, so you would think they would since they did last year. But evidently, there is a money issue since they had to wait for donors in order to make the categories similar to last year? I am glad they did though. Especially for the elders and golden age.
And they added the drum contest so that probably took alot of funding. Theyr gonna make it back though, believe me....Everybody paying like that, etc.
Its pow wow and theres always discrepancies and who what and where. LOL Its gonna be a good pow wow, cuz they have good drums and staff. . .

That must be a first in the history of any pow wow.
if it's so easy, then why complain????....let others make up their mnds......if you don't want to spend the money, then don't.....but for me, who rarely goes to powwows anymore, it's well worth it to see my friends and to sing with them......
