FYI-Pachanga shut down Club Silk and the Eagles Nest indefinitely. I guess they were having too many fights where people were being stabbed. Dang clubbers cant just drink, dance and have fun...they had to go and ruin all the afterhours fun for us.

I agree about the drum contest, they just judged the drum contest on friday nite only, one song each drum. About mid way thru the judging, Randy announced, that the women back up singers could possibly hurt the drum they are singing at. This should have been announced at the start of the contest. Then on sunday, they called out the top 3 drums.

This was my first time there but all in all I did enjoy myself, the feed was great, fireworks was excellent, and the casino/hotel staff was very polite and courteous.

I think if they want better drums, they need to up the prize monies and pay the host drums more.

yes the food was great! too bad they released us so late to go eat... waiting on the shuttle and changing clothes didn't leave much time to grubb.

Just goes to show that once again Randy Pico DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN A POWWOW!! You would think that after this many years he would learn something...but then I guess if this is the only powwow that you ever go to, and that's only because you have to be in charge of everything that goes on, you wouldn't know/learn anything! He has to constantly get on the mic, mostly to hear himself, but to give his instructions on how something is gonna be done, which I repeat is HIS WAY, or to bawl somebody out.
This is the ONLY powwow that I know of that woman backup singers are not allowed, regardless of what the singers want, because Randy feels they interfere with the judges hearing the singers sing, so therefore HE doesn't allow them. And it's not like their paying big bucks anyway so what's the big deal???
If he thinks somebody is wearing another dancers outfit during their contest he will walk right out to the arena, in front of everybody, and disqualify you because in his little mind you can't borrow anybody else's outfit!
This is one powwow that because of their scanning system ANYBODY can and does win. You can be the worst of the worst and end up in 1st place.....and the really good dancers won't even place!!
He has stupid rules and I know quite a few prominant people that refuse to attend this powwow because of him.
But because the prize money (excluding the drum contest) is pretty decent there are still plenty who come to dance and compete.
But the feed is fantastic!! As is the fireworks show, almost makes all the rest of the crap worth it!! And you just gotta learn to TUNE HIM OUT!!!!

in agreement with above

I have to say it all balances out at pachanga and yes tuning out is good advice. we have contested there singing under various names and the results sometimes come out very surprising for both singing and dance contests. one year in particular we felt we got shafted not even making the final cut in the center of the arena...so the boys left in a huff... becuz of that incident I changed my perspective and just roll with the punches now. since then I have a good time there, enjoy the feed, fireworks and ignore the extra speeches.

our drum pay for showing up wasnt too bad, but that was when gas was 2$ not sure how it was this time. I agree the drum contest money could be doubled or even tripled to stay par with dancer money. that could attract some good drums from the neighboring states. a song from a hat is interesting and we got a fancy dance song...simple...

Oh yeah, the song from the hat. the only thing that gets me is how you gonna pull a Flag Song......to sing for a contest song?? That's just as bad as putting a Memorial song in there....which I wouldn't doubt he had in there! Some songs just don't belong in a drum contest!! But at least he did pick some good judges who actually knew what they were doing and knew better than to listen to his dumb instructions.

I've never been to this powwow, so I asked around ahead of time. I didn't have anything else to do that weekend, so I thought Ok, can it be that bad? And from everyone I asked, YES, it can be that bad. I was told up front that it was unorganized, hot, questionable contesting, Randy Pico, too many host drums, and that the buffet and fireworks show shouldn't determine how good a pow wow is. So I stayed home. Thanks to everyone for confirming my choice!!!
