Question "Powwow open to all dancers" What does this mean!?

So today I was emailed a site from a fellow dancer and I to am unsure of what this means. A powwow in VA is saying that "All traditional dancers welcome." So is this saying that just anyone with out a card can show up and "play" indian? (I hate to sound rude but I have showed up to one to many of those in VA not to mention I am bringing my grandmother and well she refuses to even sit and watch those. She just gets to upset!)
Thanks for your time
:)
On a side note: I have been to GREAT Powwows in VA we have some legit tribes and the people in them are great. I have just not had the best luck these past few months!

Aren't most powwows open to all dancers, but some require "cards" to register for contests??

Is it saying that it's open to both Northern and Southern Traditional dancers for both Men and Women...

Most powwows out east are open to non-card carrying people, ndn's and non-ndns. If they made it so exclusive the amount of dancers present would be fairly low... save for upstate New York (Oneida, Seneca... area). The only difference, as Wyo points out, is that cards are sometimes required to compete. One powwow in NJ will still give a non-carded member a number but it's on white paper and those with cards who compete are colored...

Final note... If the powwow is hosted by a publicly funded entity (university, local govt, school. etc) then they have to accept anyone and everyone.

Thanks so much! I got in contact with a person who had helped with the planing of the Powwow. Its open to all as you said because of the Local Community College who is hosting it.

east coast powwows are all mixed so its like this pick and choose deal. theres the mohican powwow out in east and the jackson michigan powwow that all ask for card for contest.its all the same anywhere you go. my experience when i used to dance jingle and go from powwow to powwow is if theres more of a native community (ex : edmonton, alberta,etc...) then the powwows are better or at least it seemed.

like toledo powwow forget about it its not very good powwow and theres no native community persay here. my family is just here cuz my dad got a job out here but they aint from ohio. alot of natives out this way are just here for work. we misplaced.

I am from Ontario and I thought that all traditional dancers are supposed to be registered if they have regalia to show off and perform their traditional dances. They were given number cards for the contest mostly in competition dances. There were some traditional dancers who registered to be judge for their traditional dances without the number cards.

I never knew about the East of United States that has problem with mixed dancers and not sure where they are suppose to be participants in order to be involved as a competition dancers.

I have never been involved in the contest as a regalia dancer as I am Deaf. I can hear with my hearing aid that the drums are loud enough for me to hear but I can also felt the vibration from them. But I don't think I was not cut out this traditional dances.

There was one deaf traditional dancer for hoop dancing which he was very good at it. I was amazed at him. If he can do it, I could have done it, too. But now I am an old woman. I was told many times that I can not do it because of my deafness. Dang, them negative ignorant authorities telling me how to run my life that I could not do it back then.

dancing lessons

well best bet is to watch and learn how to dance at powwows. if you go up to a dancer and nicely ask them they might teach you and help you through making your outfit and such. thats pretty much the only way.

Lots of youtube videos out there. Good idea to watch some to see the movements. Many of us travel anywhere from around the corner to 20 hours or more for a good powwow. Powwows.com and news from Indian country produces calendars for those who write in to tell about their events. Seems like there is always a powwow going on any weekend of the year. Arlington, VA is coming up soon. Might want to thing about it.
Have a wonderful day!!
