ndne,

Did I see this right: "1st Place $20,000?"

Wow this is the biggest 1st place pot I have ever seen!
What is the breakdown after that?

$20,000.00 is right!

Yes, the first place in drum contest is $20,000.00 or Twenty thousand dollars! The breakdown after that is:
$5,000.00
$4,000.00
$3,000.00
$2,000.00
$1,000.00

The drum split is $3,000.00 for those that do not place.

Sidenote: Do NOT believe any rumors you may hear about our pow-wow being cancelled unless you hear it from me. I have been told this nasty rumor has surfaced in the past. Don't know why Wonder if it could be because of the many other pow-wows happening the same weekend.

I gotta question.
First I'll explain. I went to the tribal office to sell some stuff. The reception clerk kjndly offered to put an announcement to the employees on the intercom that someone was selling crafts at the waiting room foyer. I waited. Thirty seconds later the phone rang and it was for me. Dang, who da hell tracked me down? Anyways the lady from the finance department asked me to come to her room and fill out some papers to tax any purchases I made and submit the tax to the tribe. I said okay, but I said to myself, " Whoa, I'm not going to tax anybody. I'm outta here."

Now to the question. Will there be tax taken off any winnings, honorarium, etc. Will the vendors have to charge for frybread, crafts, art?

Just set everyone straight before anything happens. Miigwech.

I'll still go, no matter what. But... nobody likes that kind of surprise.

ndneyez - I know that my question will take time to answer, as you would have to bring it up at a meeting and check into the financial policy of your rez. No hurry.

Twenty grand! holy. Will your arbor be big enough to hold all the drums showing up for that?

Ok......here is an answer to your questions about the taxes:

1) Is there a tribal tax on the rez? Yes, there is. It's about a year old.

2) Can pow-wow vendors charge you the tribal sales tax for their crafts, food, etc..? NO, they cannot charge you any taxes whatsoever. It doesnt matter where they are from or what they are selling. This is a tribal council directive for the pow-wow only (this is why they wanted you to charge taxes).

3) Will the tribe tax your prize money? The answer is YES and NO.....lol For example: If you win $2,000.00 that is the amount that will be in your envelope when the pow-wow is over. HOWEVER you will be responsible to Unlce Sam at the end of the year. We do send 1099's (tax forms) if you make $600.00 or more from winning. THis is your responsibility when you file your taxes at the end of the year.

UNLESS I HEAR DIFFERENT THIS YEAR, this is how it works. This is how it has worked last year and we had the tribal tax in place. I will keep you up to date if anything changes

So...generally Uncle Sam's cut of winnings such as these is 28%-the 1st place drum would responsible for $5,600 in taxes while a first place dance winner-approximately $560. He's a bad Uncle.!!!

Well, now taxes all depend on the individual's circumstances don't they? Dependents, other income, other 1099's, etc..... BUT....I have since learned a trick from my tax advisor. If the drum that wins the $20,000.00 divides the money equally among 15 singers (for example).....you can get 1099 forms from Staples and send them to your singers......then each singer is only responsible for their share of the winnings. This takes the tax burden off of one person :0)

SO hopefully this doesn't turn into a tax consulting thread and stays focused the great pow-wow we're putting together :0)

Great plan and I agree on focusing on your great event, don't get me wrong, I was just noting how 'bad' Uncle Sam is.
