Onslow County will be the site this fall for the first and what might be one of the largest powwows to honor both military veterans and American Indians on the East Coast.

The Great Salt Water Veterans Honor and American Indian Heritage Powwow, which is being organized by the Coastal Carolina Indian Center, will run Nov. 5-7 at the Onslow County Fairgrounds.

The event is the first of its kind on the East Coast said organizer Teresa Morris, and it is hoped that it will generate a renewed respect for veterans and American Indian heritage.

"It's the start of something we really pray will become an annual event," Morris said. "We're calling it a historic gathering because never before has anything like this happened on the East Coast and it's long overdue."

She said North Carolina was a particularly ideal spot because of the large number of Indians that live in the state.

"It's going to help put a face on the fact that North Carolina is the largest population of Native Americans east of the Mississippi," she said. "It can bring to light the 10,000 years of indigenous history here. You'd be surprised how many people have Native American bloodlines but don't realize it."

In addition to that, eastern North Carolina is home to Camp Lejeune, which fits along with the powwow tradition of honoring veterans.

"No matter what powwow you go to, you always see them honor veterans," Morris said. "It's important to recognize that these people have answered a higher calling."

Morris said the event is sure to draw big numbers. It will be highlighted by a ceremony honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action, a wall of honor and guest speakers including former presidential candidate H. Ross Perot and Roger Willie, a veteran and star of the 2002 film "Windtalkers."

Another group that will be playing a prominent role is Rolling Thunder, a veterans group dedicated to publicizing the POW-MIA issue.

Hank Hangesleben, president of N.C. Chapter 5 of Rolling Thunder, said he was excited about getting involved in such event.

"I heard about it and I thought it was a good idea," he said. "That's what we're all about… It's a worthy cause and we're all for it."

Morris said Perot will be honored for his work in helping families of POWs and MIAs.

She said she was even more excited about the prominent role of Black Lodge Singers, a Grammy award-winning powwow drum group and Cedartree, another drum group, whose lead singer was once stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Morris and Hangesleben said one of the most important parts of the powwow will be the presence of Navaho code-talkers from World War II.

The veterans are credited with giving a major boost to the U.S. effort in the Pacific by using their language as a code against the Japanese.

"I can't wait to come here just to stand in awe of the code talkers," Hangesleben said. "Look what they did for us in World War II. They saved our butts."

Morris hopes the festival will reach the same level of prominence as the two other most well known American Indian festivals; the Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival in Oklahoma City, Okla. and the Gathering of Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, N.M.

"This is just the beginning," she said. "We hope this will become something people look forward to and plan for."
