Sioux scalp being auctioned on Ebay

[B] Now this is really disgusting. There is a Sioux Scalp currently being auctioned on Ebay, AGAINST their policy on human remains . I have emailed quite a few folks asking them to also contact Ebay via email and file a protest/complaint.
I am posting this here asking you to do the same. Contact Ebay and everyone in your adress folder and ask them to do the same.
Below is the link to the auction, last time I checked it was over $2000.00

http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/...ayphotohosting
Or Search under Sioux Scalp if link does not work

That's terrible. Who could actually sleep at night doing something like that. I have a friend who works for a Native American newspaper in this area, I'm going to contact her and let her know. She also loves Ebay, or she did.

If you scroll down a little more, the auction administrator does admit it was an oversight and has since pulled it from the shelves, so to speak....

Not over yet

I am sorry to say this is not over yet. Where as Ebay may have removed it the ppl who has it up for auction still has it out on their own site.
This was first brought to my attention last nite in my yahoo group to which I am list owner of. Since this time I was asked to email the Elders of the Flathead Resverations with a summery of who was the seller and what we know. This is a copy of what was sent to them.
*****************
O'Siyo Rob,
I was asked to contact you in referrence to the SIOUX SCALP 4 SALE ON eBay. This was first brought to my attention in the yahoo group NativeAmericanFamilyResearch to which I am the list owner of. Since the first posting the ebay seller has removed the scalp from their auction within ebay but it is still listed within this site of theirs 2858 Sioux Scalp.

In a reply to them from an email I sent them asking several questions abt this auction I recieved the following reply back......
From: "Allard Auctions, Inc."
To: [email protected]
This piece in question came out of Steve Allard's father's Flathead
Indian Museum in St. Ignatius, Montana on the Flathead Reservation
(Doug Allard is a member of the Flathead Tribe (Salish)). This auction
is a liquidation of that museum and Mr. Allard originally included the
piece as part of the liquidation but has since pulled it from the
offerings. We are certainly sensitive to these issues and are very
sorry for the oversight in the publishing of the catalog.

Marine Johnson
Auction Administrator

Now they are still listed within ebay as allard-actions and a listing of theirs can be found at eBay Seller: allard-auctions: Antiques Decorative Arts, Ethnographic items on eBay.com Their mailing address and phone number according to the about me page is.....
Allard Auctions
PO Box 1030
419 Flathead St. #4
St. Ignatius MT, 59865
USA
406.745.0500 (Phone)
406.745.0502 (Fax)

As put in the words of one of my members
"It's not an artifact!!!!!!!!! It's a piece of a human being, It was the head of a child that a mother stroked while she nursed her boy & told him all of her dreams for him, it was the head of a boy that a father patted when he joined them on his first hunt, it was the head of a husband whose wife stroked it at night for comfort, the hair of a man who a newborn grasped onto as he also told him about his dreams for his young one, it was the head of a terrified man being run down as his tribe was being slaughtered screaming & helpless, it was the hair of a man who is no more for the crime of being Native."

The part that also bothers me is if this was truly a piece of a musuem collection then why is it being sold.....to me this is a disgrace to our heritage.

If I can be of any more help in this matter please do feel free to contact me.

not much can be done if they decide to sell thru their own auction site. Tasteless just the same, though.
I contacted everyone on my email list asking them to file a protest with the auction co, and notify Ebay of the Human Remains Policy of theirs and to pass the link on to thieir contacts. I found out it generated quite a response and the auction co, "pulled" the scalp because they did not realize it had been put up for auction with other artifacts. Which I told them is BS because why then did they have a starting bid of 2 thousand dollars? No response.
I always check Ebay for things such as the sort and have even had an auction on endangered Red Turtle shells pulled.
Ebay in my opinion does a SORRY job of monitoring what is being offered on their site.

So it was originally in the Flathead Indian Museum, which (right or wrong) lends endorsement to its being offered for sale in the eyes of museums and collector-types, BUT it looks like they apologized and pulled the ad. (I couldn't find it in the references mentioned.)

Unless I missed something, perhaps it really is over now? I try to get my mind around the whole story before bombarding someone with how-dare-you emails.

We Have been notified by tribal affiliations that this auction lot is either considered culturally sensitive or may contain illegal bird or animal parts and therefore is not legal to sell.
They have requested that this item not be sold. It is hereby withdrawn from this auction and is not offered for sale. It has been returned to the Flathead Indian Museum.

I believe the reason it was returned to the Flathead Musuem was due to the fact it was part of their inventory in the first place. How did this Allard Action truely came abt the scalp to even auction it off is beyond me. Any one of TRUE Native American backgrounds would know that this is NOT something that can be sold as they were trying to do.

Everyone assumes that it is an NDN scalp. Anyone realize that museums are commonly wrong on their descriptions?

It looks kinda brown and not real long. Unless I can touch it and see how fine it is I would say it is probably a NON-NDN scalp and most likely a little kid.

I like CoyoteLady's text about it being 'somebody'. If it was written about a non-ndn, does it have the same effect? Does it change anyones minds?

Either way, having a "piece" of a person, regardless of warrior status is pretty gross. But I guess minds thought differently 135 years ago.

Be it a Non NDN or NDN scalp to me it was disrespectful not only to the ancestor but to the descendants of today. One of my members in the group where this was brought to my attention asked Is this not 2007 or are we still in 1887? How can you put a price on something like this? This was a life at one time (IF it was truely real that is) I realize it is also a piece of History but everything has its proper place in time. To me on an auction block just was not one of them.

Sacred Native American objects 4 sale?

We are told that one auction house, in particular, continues to sell off sacred Native American objects. The sacred nature of these items has been confirmed by a Sioux elder at Pine Ridge, a direct descendent of Henry Crow Dog. These sacred objects are Sioux in origin, but this fact is disguised by the seller in listing them as Flathead or similar.

If you wish to protest the practice of selling sacred Native American objects at auction write Steve Allard at [email protected]

We would like to think that our Native American sacred, religious, and ceremonial heritage is not for sale to the highest bidder.
