spotlight powwow report

well I'm here at spotlight powwow and you want to know how its going. well the singing is good. blacklodge.northern cree.cozad.youngbird. new agency.a few others. the dancing is right on. the ground is soft but it look nice. the pa is weak. you have a hard time hearing the drums. the one thing that made the powwow bad is the mc. well during the contest all he does is talk and call people out that he knows before and during contest. I wish he would keep quiet during the contest and quit calling peoples names out. that would be fair to all. we only have one go round. that's no good for a 3 day powwow. the dance judge makes the powwow scary. but we will have to wait and see what happens. this powwow could be rocking if the just fix the little things. turn up the drums and turn off the mc and give us one more go round.

they had the iron man fancy dance on sat night. the top three was a good dance off. spike won it. the othere specials that they had was mens traditional and straight combine put up by the head man. merle eaglespeaker won that one. we got the hand drum and the two step today with team dance.

they actually danced the adults divisions another song on sunday. was pulling for some old style trads to get in (men's no.) seven drums present (4th in so. was Outsiders). Team dance: 1st- Frybread (Randall, Shaun S. and Kenny S.) 2nd- sprinkles? ladies southern 3rd-name? (ardell, nate, paris, and merle).
No rain so don't know how the bowl drains. Windy as heck sunday. dust bowl in dancer parking lot. But seen some snow on mtn tops to the west.
hopefully they add some teen and jr specials in the future. dang spot check in 1st go-round of intertribal. oh well, went there to dance. maybe that's why some names didn't get in. lol

pay outs

As a general rule I think prize moneys should be divided up more evenly, that is one reason I chose not to attend this event and ones with a simular pay outs.

1st-$1000 2nd-$650 3rd-$450 4th-$350 =2450

Why not 900, 700, 500, 400 =2500 ? you would have a better atmosphere.

When there is such a difference between 1st and 2nd it is not good.

just my opinion.

Wow!!! those are some good winners though...and if you missed the spotcheck....well, that is a catch sometimes when you go sit down instead of dancing your intertribals....I had that happen once, because I was chasing my girls around and my dad said I was there to dance and that served me right...so from then on I try to dance every intertribal whether there are spotchecks or not. Except if I am singing...LOL
Congrats to all the winners, especially my girls Danita and Jackie, and of course Rooster (did Gina win???), Daryl, Tate and Rusty..yea!!!!, Amber Rose, summer, Spike, and my nephew Juaquin(wakeen lol)...good dancing as usual. Hope everyone had a good time and a safe travel back home today.
Sandy

Lame pow wow things...

Well, it sounds like this one may top the list...
Peter Joe Olney was the same MC from last year and he did the same thing last year, either no one complained enough or the committee doesn't care, either way that situation sucks.

Spotchecks...the lamest thing any committee can do. I will maintain that spotchecks don't really help anything, does a dancer really want to win based on the most points possible or by winning a dance contest? Spotchecks don't work because there are dancers who are singing-should they get points? There are moms/dads taking babies to get food, the O, getting them dressed, there are elders who are cold, tired, hungry, there are singers who are dancing getting ready for their song, there are any number of issues that could come up and would prevent a dancer from dancing every single song...why should they be penalized?

Payout...the payout for the drum contest was weird too. If a committee has that much money for one category...$2450 for adults, why not offer more places? Perhaps they just wanted to be able to say $1000 1st place, but if they aren't paying something close to that for 2nd and 3rd...it doesn't really matter. How about 800, 600, 400, 200, 150 and 3 consolations of $100 each. That would at least help some people with gas money or food money and maybe MORE dancers would show up.

And was there golden age? I didn't see the winners for that. In my opinion, any pow wow that has southern categories should provide a host southern drum. It's unfair to the southern drums who are competing to have to sing those songs in addition to their own contest songs...the northern drums don't have to do that, so why should the southern drums?

Spotchecks are totally unnecessary!!! They did that crap at Elmo this year, it invovled my uncle, my cuzzin, and some of my bros were all gettin ready to sing an intertribal and instead they had "spot checkers" make sure they trapped every dancer in the arena and made sure no other dancers tried to get in there. After that, they did a round dance song for the spot check. It was really bullsh*t of them to do that when a group was about to sing, which was mostly dancers at the drum. Also, many other dancers who were probably gettin ready for their contest or maybe dancers who just got done singing or gettin ready to sing (like drum contest singers) were also excluded in this too.

I think spot checks are cheap. It's funny too because spotchecks are very popular in this Flathead area. It's dumb and pointless.

okay, don't know correct order but some names called Mens Golden Age combine: Andrew Windyboy, Bob Redelk, Barry hamilton, Norman Largo. Ladies: C. Cozad, Linda T., and, and..... Some Southern categories danced to Northern Drum and vice versa. Guess it was due to rotation. "... these champion dancers dance to any song.." Actually, my thinking is headstaff and/or tabulators would call for spotcheck supposedly to break ties if any. Or if their buddies that were late for GE need to make up some points.lol Or maybe it was their turn to buy or pay for next weeks motel. Wouldn't you say the same for GE points (accumulation of points) most points win. Most committees leave the decisions and operations to headstaff. Unless Head Judges decide who gets in or not. Where the tabulators are used as pawns.

Talking Hmmm....

Well, I guess I had a good time, but yeah, the announcer was kinda annoying because he only favored certain people and announced their names before they contested....nuff said.... Northern Cree was off the hook! and the other drums were good to. The weather was great except for the wind. Maybe next year they'll have it in their convention center. (hint, hint) those casino's down there have nice accommodations except when it has to do with pow wow's and dancers and putting up with the weather....aye... At least they supply us with water, pop and snacks all weekend. That's a cost savings in it's own! oh yeah, and they fed us on Saturday....Thank you!

As for contests, yeah, maybe they can split some of the categories like most pow wow's are going now, Men's contemporary tradish and Men's original tradish or 18-34 and 35-54 categories to offset some of those who are contemporary and original style dancers. Just a thought.

I still had a good time at this one even though I didn't get to celebrate with Merle E. for his birthday as much as I could've....but they needed a driver home to...aye...

spotlight powwow report

Golden Age had the most dancers and they were all lumped into one category. The Golden Age Women had about 25 dancers, northern buckskin, northern cloth, southern, buckskin, southern cloth and jingle. This group should be split up. Wheres the respect for the golden age dancers!!!!!!!

Thumbs down My think'n...about this Spotlight 29 stuff!

So, here's my think'n...That pow-wow was ran just awful! I didn't see NE1 mention the fact that Friday was only a 2 1/2 hr session! Wut da heck!! On a Friday night!! Then right after GE, which was right @ 6 PM (who the heck can make it way over there right after wk? Hair all braided for your entire fam & still be ready?) then they have a spotcheck right there soon after? Who the heck thought that gud idea?

Well in the 1st place it was outside in December, when the Elders/Lil 1's need to be taken care of, so who's gonna be able to do all that + a spotlight 29 check?

Me, as a tabulator - it comes down 2 - 1 point! Agreed! But let's be fair 2 every1 & tell em' they have a dance off or that there's gonna be a ridiculous spotlight 29 check come'n up only on a SUNDAY afternoon!

But in reality - who's gonna dance every song sung by Eagle Rib - Aaaayyee! Lol! But seriously, think about it - if you were 2 take care of your mom, dad, kids, husband - then braid your own hair and still make it 2 a 6 PM GE, then right after that -make it 2 a spotcheck?

Oh yeah, also what's up w/the MC makin'n mention of all the dancers that he only knew of - before/during/after the contest? Oh even durin the winner annoucements! Gee, dat was lame - w/all their nonsense commentary!

But the food & pop, water, tea, coffee & heaters under a tent - was a gud idea! Hi-5 there commitee!

But next tyme comittee - think about those GE times & all the spotlight 29 check's! Just rule out NE spotlight 29 checks all 2gether! (especially havin' GE right on the dot @ 6 PM on Fri 12 on a Sat - oh & another 12 on Sun? Gee dat committee! No mercy - AAaayyyee!)

Stacy D!!

P.S.
But seen'n my bud's was da best! Right on!
