Lightbulb Stopping on time

I judged several men's contests this past weekend. In the men's fancy dance, every dancer "got bucked off" (aka. Overstepped). I wanted another song but the other judges agreed, if they all overstepped, then go ahead and judge them. Hmmmm?

Stopping on time used to be part of the rules of fancy dancing. It was honorable to walk off if you did not stop on time. It seems this rule is no longer applicable because of the huge prize money involved.

To the best of my knowledge only in northern Oklahoma, dance contestants still regularly walk off if they overstep. Are there other regions where this happens regularly at every powwow?

If you were judging, would you not give points to a popular dancer if he/she blatently over or understepped? Would you at least score them lower than a less known dancer that hit all the stops? Is honesty a thing of the past?

What is your opinion?

I was discussing that with someone who was actually in that contest you speak of. It was ugly.

Not the discussion, but the dancing.

I think the one who holds the answer is the one who invented stopping on a dime.

When I first came on this site, there was an elder. He knew everything and anything about stopping on time.

His name was Steve Stops on Time. He was from the old school.

New to all this. wanting to dance

Hi all,
I'm in San Diego and have been attending a few of the Soaring Eagles Pow Wow workshops. They are mostly for the children, which is great. But the truth is, I want to learn how to dance at Pow Wow's. Where do I start? Can any of you recommend teachers? I'm from the Yaqui nation, so our tribe is not known for it's Pow Wows. I have been a professional dancer for over twenty years, but in contemporary dance. So hopefully, that will be of some help for me. Thank you and keep dancing!

sammymwayne,

Start making your regalia for the style of dance you wish to do. Also buy some pendleton blankets and shawls. When you complete your outfit, find someone who is respected in your community to help bring you into the arena for the first time. After you have entered the arena with a special song, give away the pendleton blankets and shawls to the person who brought you in, the drum that sang for you, the head staff and other select individuals. Now comes the learning portion... continue to go to powwows and dance your style. I guarantee you will improve over time. "Powwow is not easy, it's a lifestyle."

If Isaiah Bob is there, you can judge all others by his stops!

At GON...sumbuddy missed (I won't name category), and still WON haha! You could hear groans in the audience! haha

But, I see plenty of dancers walking off, good sports...Ruben Littlehead once even called a young man back into the song, since he was so honest, to finish it out.

Even the "Best" might get caught in a song they don't know...and I have seen them
"loading up" extra small steps at the end of the song, so they don't miss.

Or if the category is stacked with dancers, they go into a crowd of other dancers toward the end, cover up their "stop".

Looking through my camera, and then watching my footage in slow-motion...

@sammymwayne, hook up with @AmigoKumeyaay and follow him to all the good powwows in SoCal. Being a former professional dancer should help you in moving to the songs and learn to stop on time.

See it sometimes around these parts, sometimes I see em walk off, sometimes not. But this would be no issue if a judge didn't pick them for finals or place them!! Then they would know if they don't stop on time they are not in the money!
