Question What's one thing that gets on your nerves when you're at a powwow?

My answer. I really hate when people I don't know come up and start touching my regalia without asking. (pulling on my hair ties etc. etc.)

children. Ones running around crazy with no supervision. Nothing wrong with bringing your kids to the powwow, but please watch them. They run into things, touch things, knock things over while they are running around. I know they don't mean to, but as a parent, that is disrespectful to let your kids run around when there are so many sacred items around.

Vendors selling bubblegum. Sure you can make a few bucks off the kids...but think about all the moccasins and such that get covered in the stuff.

Vendors selling noise makers and crazy toys that fly and shoot off lol. Seen too many incidents happen with kids throwing toys around. I think powwow committees need to be more responsible when it comes to what items certain vendors can sell.

.
I've got a friend that's a vendor (not food or kids toys, he sells beads, feathers, stuff like that). When I moved to Minnesota, he gave me a run down of the powwows in ND/SD/MN/WI and which ones he won't set up at because of the kids.

All the stuff that at said, and the constant mc announcements, "we've got a lost kid up here."

My dislike

I dislike that things are not explained to the general public as to customs, do's and do not's of what is allowed in the arena area.

Yeap, a friend of mine got her fan broken by a kid at a recent powwow.

When people act like they got a press pass to go with their camera. I can understand leaping up to snap a shot or two of your relatives competing. But, there are these folks who bring a tripod and a few terrabytes worth of memory cards then stand up in front of you through all the contests. There a more than a few venues where this is so bad that you can't see the powwow from the proverbial cheap seats, because of the all the amateur Steven Spielberg's.

I get stuck in the same situation at almost every powwow I run sound at. The vendors complain that it is too loud and the dancers complain that it is too quiet.

Faders up, Faders down?

Vendors or Dancers?

Who shall I tick off more??????

Now we look at the facts: When playing powwow poker, a pair of dancers beats a full house of vendors!

Faders UP!

I disdain the folks who believe that because they are at a powwow or attend them, regularly, that it "makes" them Indian. (We all know who they are...)

You either are -- or, are not -- Native BEFORE you arrive and AFTER you leave. Powwows are just a thing. Especially the corporate ones.

um...I agree. Actually Zeke, I didn't know you felt that way.

I also dislike poor organization such as a 10 pm handout of the honouriums with the expectation that my kids will be dressed and ready...sorry they are in the van; asleep!...supper was 4 hours ago, after the dancing ended, they didn't last much longer then that.

Gotta add one more to the list.....

People bringing their chairs into the ring setting up in front of all the exits. I know everyone likes to have ring side seats, but as a dancer, it gets annoying having to walk half way around the ring and try to step passed all the chairs and sun screens and strollers and things. Especially for those of us wearing bustles, trying to get through tight spaces.

Those canopies can be very annoying as well. At some some powwows, only somebody 7 feet tall can watch the dances. There should be a little more free space around the circle.

Somebody coming up and asking "may I take a picture of your pretty costume?". This just happended past year too me, I was heading for grand entry and some white woman came up and just started pulling on my jingles on my dress which freaked me out and I got really upset.

And then kids running around and there parents not watching them. Also, the do's and don'ts not being explained at a pow wow.

The canopy's can also be very annoying, there always around the circle so you have to sit behind all of them and can't see anything in the circle!

I've been to a few powwows where you could drop the rope around the circle and let the canopies form the circle. I have had people who set up canopies, move my speakers, unplug them, ask for them to be moved, and a host of other things.

Sorry my speaker is in your way. It was here long before you set your canopy up. It's not my fault you made the decision to set up at that point at the edge of the circle.

Move your canopy and quityourbellyachin! If this was a concert, security would have tossed you out the gate!

1) People running powwows who don't have a clue. Running a powwow is HARD WORK, you might get dirty or break a nail! If you're a slacker, don't be on a powwow committee! The woman in charge of vendors last weekend showed up late, didn't have vendor spaces / measurements laid out, didn't didn't know fire codes, got an attitude after giving our space to someone while we were unloading. Just because your daughter can dance doesn't mean you know how to run a powwow.

2) Contest powwows that are nothing but contests after Grand Entry. If you don't want to contest, you might as well go get undressed after Round Dance, cuz sometimes there aren't any more intertribals the rest of the night.

3) BIG PET PEEVE! Indians who expect to be paid every time they pick up a drumstick or put on a moccasin! It's not all about the money, people! What happened to dancing for the pride of being Indian, dancing for those who can't dance anymore, dancing for the ancestors? I miss traditional powwows.

4) Lack of respect for elders. Most powwows don't take food to elders anymore. That was a duty of princesses in past years. I used to take a trash sack around so that elders could dispose of their dishes too. Don't make it hard on elders to attend dances!

people who think that the pow-wow is free babysitting for the weekend, it doesn't seem to matter what are the kids are either from 2 to 16, and chewing gum (since I sat in some last year that someone's kid chewed and left in the seat of a chair. It left a nasty spot on my skins that I had to work like a mad woman to get out fo them....

people who just throw their garbage under the bleachers and on the ground by where they sat. Even though there are garbage cans everywhere. A lot of traditional powwow grounds are suppose to be sacred, and to just leave your trash laying around is really upsetting, even if it isn't in the actual ring, campsites and everything else.

and people who save spots. They take off, but leave their blankets on the bleachers, or leave their chairs in the ring. If your not there, take your stuff so someone else can sit down and enjoy. I can understand if your just running to a stand to get something to drink and what not, but if your really gonna be gone for a hour or so, just take your stuff and find a different spot later. Same thing with camp sites. People who go rope off, or posts reserved signs. You don't own the grounds. Should be first come first serve, and the only exception I can justify for saving a good spot, is for elders who need to be as close to the powwow as possible, or bathrooms, fire wood piles..and such. Speaking of fire wood, that too. People take and save more wood than they need, or hog it, thinking the wood will run out. Too many times have I seen parents go send all their kids to drag wood from the woodpile to their own pile by their tents, then the wood runs out, and some people don't have any, while someone next to them have huge stockpiles. Wood is for everyone, and should be used as needed, not stockpiled and hogged.
