and people who save spots. They take off, but leave their blankets on the bleachers, or leave their chairs in the ring. If your not there, take your stuff so someone else can sit down and enjoy. I can understand if your just running to a stand to get something to drink and what not, but if your really gonna be gone for a hour or so, just take your stuff and find a different spot later. Same thing with camp sites. People who go rope off, or posts reserved signs. You don't own the grounds. Should be first come first serve, and the only exception I can justify for saving a good spot, is for elders who need to be as close to the powwow as possible, or bathrooms, fire wood piles..and such. Speaking of fire wood, that too. People take and save more wood than they need, or hog it, thinking the wood will run out. Too many times have I seen parents go send all their kids to drag wood from the woodpile to their own pile by their tents, then the wood runs out, and some people don't have any, while someone next to them have huge stockpiles. Wood is for everyone, and should be used as needed, not stockpiled and hogged.
Hogging the fire wood is a good one!

A true campground story:

A few years ago, I was at a powwow where on late Saturday night a bunch of young people were hanging around their campsite. It was past midnight and they were having a bit of fun and had a radio playing way too loud for that time of night. The guy in the space net to mine asked the kids to turn the radio down. He did it in a very nice way. Needless to say the kids actually turned the radio up telling the guy that if he didn't like it, he could pack up and leave. The man stood there for a few seconds in total amazement. None of us could believe what we heard from these kids. Anyway.........

The man picked up the radio, turned it off himself and tossed it in the campfire. Before he left the kids campsite, he told the kids, Don't like it?, leave!

So may strories, so little time. Tune in for another episode of of As the Powwow Turns!

Just because your daughter can dance doesn't mean you know how to run a powwow.

2) Contest powwows that are nothing but contests after Grand Entry. If you don't want to contest, you might as well go get undressed after Round Dance, cuz sometimes there aren't any more intertribals the rest of the night.

3) BIG PET PEEVE! Indians who expect to be paid every time they pick up a drumstick or put on a moccasin! It's not all about the money, people! What happened to dancing for the pride of being Indian, dancing for those who can't dance anymore, dancing for the ancestors? I miss traditional powwows.

4) Lack of respect for elders. Most powwows don't take food to elders anymore. That was a duty of princesses in past years. I used to take a trash sack around so that elders could dispose of their dishes too. Don't make it hard on elders to attend dances!
Hi. How are you? We talked about a new fancy shawl outfit. Remember?

Hey! Don't be messing with the toy bow and arrow set. We shoot them in team play at powwow. Any target is fair game. At night we add a bit of fire via a cotton rag and coleman fuel. It's easier to find them.

The main target is the food vendor. He who has the best frybread never gets attacked.

If you have bad frybread,

It's an NDN thing!

If you really take a hard look. you may find it's the white kids that shoot the arrows and such during honor dances and such. I've never seen an NDN kid do that. It's always the spectater kids. White parents don't watch their kids.

I've never even seen an NDN kid with one of those chinese toys. That junk is for the visitors looking for stuff they think is NDN.

I take that back because I did see on exception. I did see a NDN kid in regulia shooting one of the bows at powwow. But he was aiming carefully and only hitting white people. A lost art!

the people who think they know it all! i was at Schemitzun a couple of years ago and was sitting next to this older black "gentleman" and we rose for Grand Entry. i took a few shots of people i knew as they came in. he makes a remark/condemnation of me taking shots during Grand Entry. it was not accepted behavior to take any photos. i remarked that the MC didn't say nothing about taking photos during Grand Entry and here in the Northeast it was acceptable behavior to take photos.

he was PISSED that i knew something about pow wows and i had the nerve to "back talk" someone of his age. i guess he figrured that because he was old that made him an elder and also that maybe he just found out he was native to some way and was trying to prove his native-ness.

That's a family issue. Not a powwow issue. The next time, Just say NO! It works for drugs! But you also need to thell them why you are saying no. Any reasonable person would understand. For the unreasonable people, tough taco, get over it!

Instant NDN's...and I'm not just talking wannabe's, a lot of our own do this.
step one: show up at a powwow
step two: attend a circle or ceremony at the powwow
step three: buy a cheap dress (you know the ones some vendors make in an hour) and a sarong (as a shawl)
step four: run up to the elder you saw runnin the circle or ceremony, show them your instant "regalia" and ask for your NDN name.

There are of course non-powwow variations. I see the tail end of this a lot when helping my mom in law. She nicely tells them they need to talk to some dancers about dancing and that she is unable to name them cause she doesn't know them and to go talk to their family.

Which leads me to a few more things. The NDN's handing out names to strangers at pseudo-naming ceremonies at powwows. Cause they are the ones responsible for slowing down the instant NDN who came to them, and ultimatly the ones to blame for this, NOT the poor impatient NDN who wasn't told better when they gave the chance. Of course they are to blame if they were told and then ignored the advice.

And the next thing, this is the kind where it's annoying but you walk away laughing. Is the people who inquire about your NDN name and then act all patronizing cause ya don't have one. In our family we got our name as a child and then some got adult names...(from family)...I don't, mainly cause they'd probably call me "Woman who sticks her feet in her mouth"

step three: buy a cheap dress (you know the ones some vendors make in an hour) and a sarong (as a shawl)
step four: run up to the elder you saw runnin the circle or ceremony, show them your instant "regalia" and ask for your NDN name.

Oh Lord, I just got on this thread and read it from the beginning. LOL I know sooo much what you talking about with the ndn name thing. I had a little girl at the Lancaster OH powwow who kept trying to talk to me during the intertribals. I answered her questions and such and was trying to polite while not running into anyone dancing because of course I was dancing too. She was in the arena and kept literally getting under my feet. I didn't know it till later but she was pulling on my jingles. Then right before the jingle exhibition, she was standing next to the ropes and while they were explaining the dress and the dance, she starts trying to talk to me REALLY loud. I just said, "Shhhh" as descreetly as possible and shot her mom a dirty look. That kid annoyed me the rest of the powwow. People, watch your kids! I have no problem with young kids, white or ndn, asking questions. But for god's sake do not come up and rip a jingle off my dress.

I agree too about those d*mn flutes. A vendor gave my daughter one of those things....it found the garbage can as soon as we got home.
