one thing that gets on my nerves... young singers who run around when their drum isn't singing...they come to the drum dressed like they are getting ready to go out to the night club instead of the drum... and hootchie mamma chorus girls... Yeeee. jokes.

and another thing that gets on my nerves...{ to you young singers... and you probably don't know who you are...(but the rest of us do) } is when your drum is up to sing next in rotation and you all come blazing back to your drum and a couple of stragglers make it back after the song has staRTED. BUT i guess that is just how it is now days. no respect.

But to you singers that were brought up right and have respect for the drum.. and all you keen chorus girls... i have the most respect for you.

Angry non-natives

Non-native's who dance all crazy and they think they are know-it-alls, when it comes to powwow protocols.

But the worst is white dudes, who think they are Northern Traditional dancers, who were born and raised in the south, who blow their whistles on a drum. At the wrong times, blowing it in honor of themselves, and don't even take a moment and talk about why he blew it.

Trying to push an elder in a wheel chair through crowds is hell!
Setting chairs in front row, then dancing 30 mins in GE walking back to see that ppl who don't dance bring their baby strollers and set up right in front of you, then they have friends who come and visit and stand during most of the contesting

(At this point I could tell she was a total wojapi) She came back with a bag with a bunch of little trinkets in it, telling me it was from a Navajo medicine man. At that point I was totally freaked out, but maintained my respect for her while declining the gift in a good way. In short, new-agers at Powwows bother me.

The second thing that bothers me is when people paint with colors, or dress with society bonnets or symbols that they are not a part of, or haven't earned. At the VERY least, they could at least know about the original society they are representing. I don't know if it's due to modernization, romanticism, or what, but I find it disrespectful.

Also at the Sherman Indian High School Powwow, I got harassed by some gangster kids for being half. they told me I don't belong there, and that the event was only for Indians. I wanted to talk with them and see if they actually knew a thing or two about what they claim to be, but I didn't want to get into that. Also another time at the Ute Powwow in Ignacio, a gangster kid harassed me about my lack of shirt in leggings, which really bothered me too since again, I am sure he knew nothing about what he claims to be. In the powwow at Towac (spelled it wrong I am sure) In New Mexico, I got harassed by a glonnie because of my blood quantum, telling me "who am I trying to fool?" and that I shouldn't be there. He also pulled the horsehair out of my bustle, jerk! Haha. I guess I am trying to say I don't appriciate the harassment at powwows for any reason. Respect was once a common virtue, but it seems it is going away in the younger generation.
If you're light-skinned, you will get harrassed & teased. That's how it is. :)

It's too bad people can't be honest. Judge's are supposed to know that they cannot judge if they have family competing.

For my first choice I'd have to say is the dancer "Specials" that are sponsored by familys and/or the committee. You know the one's that go in this order(or longer):
  • Honor Song
  • Song for the Honored, often specially made.
  • Speaker of choice rambling.
  • Song just for the dancer so everyone can see their moves. 4 TIMES THROUGH - WITH THE TAIL!!!
  • Dancers get out in the arena and give it all they got. Sometimes up to three or 4 songs - With The Tail.
  • Family/Committe narrow the dancers down to 10 finalists.
  • Split them into groups of 5 and two more songs each - both With The Tail.
  • Family/Committe narrows it down to 5.
  • Two more songs, maybe three - With The Tail, of course..have to keep it old skool ya know...
  • Finally, 1st through 5th are picked. HOORAY!! Ho-wah my cuzin got in there!!!
  • Giveaway time and out comes the dreaded "Give-Away List". *Time begins to stand still and you don't even get a roll of duct tape out of it*
  • Speaker rambles AGAIN.
  • OK, Give-away done time for the Honoring Song. Bring out the Winners and all the giveaway recipients.
  • OH NO!!!, The last song is practically end-less due the the fact everyone has to come through and shake the hands of the sponsors of the event...EVERYONE!! Rendering the singing group to be out of breath, sweaty, and hoarse. *All sharing the same famous Sweat Towel between singers during and after the song*
  • Whew, its over. Wait a minute...
  • The Speaker rambles some more and annouces that the sponsor's have felt so good about what they did. They are committing to another special bigger and better than this year at next years pow-wow.
  • Finally, plan to go to another pow-wow next year AND, it's time for supper break!
The End...

That'd be mine........
That's a good time to go potty, walk around or sleep haha

I strongly believe it puts the wrong vibe when people travel miles to enjoy a pw celebration.

This past week we went to the Snow Mountain Pow Wow here in Vegas. It's a beautiful arena, but Memorial day is always very windy. Last year the second day was cancelled because the winds were so high. This year it was just beautiful out there. The winds we not wild and the dancing was great.

They have an entire section roped off for wheelchairs and elders to sit. This is great. I have never seen this before out West.

We walked around to find our sitting spot and lucked out on the North side of the circle. They have bleachers there so bringing chairs was not needed. Typically all the chair spots are taken by the tents.

Because the bleachers are scorching hot I always bring a blanket to sit on. We found a spot right on a set of bleachers that seemed to be the 'tourist section'.

Everyone was very nice and respectful. Then Grand Entrance started...

This women behind us kept bragging about how her two little ones were out there dancing. I did my best not to judge the woman who was clearly white. I looked for her family but could not see anyone. Maybe I heard her wrong.

She had a little girl and her friend sitting in small chairs in front of the bleachers. When they were singing the war song for the Veterans the crowd clapped per the MC. This was Memorial Day afterall and this pow wow among others held out here was held by the Paiute Veterans Association. Her little girl started to use one of those twist drums with the beads attached to a string on it. Twisting it between her hands to make this terrible noise I'm thinking the Chiense meant for it to sound like a drum. It doesn't stop there though. In between this terrible fake drum noise she began to howl like you would at a football game.

Everytime the crowd honored the Veterans with polite clapping she just howled. The mother behind me, who I assumed has been to a pow wow before since her two little ones were dancing, did nothing. She just smiled and sat there.

After the flags were posted I was just fed up with this little girl and her mother who clearly should know better. My Mother would have taken me to the car for a good slap if I was behaving that way and wouldn't stop. The ground around her was trashed with snow cone containers and empty gatorade bottles. This old Native couple was sitting in front of me and next to the little girls. I could tell they were just as annoyed as I was. The husband picked up the trash.

Before anyone could say something to the little girl or the mother they walked away to buy more Native souvenirs sponsored by China no doubt.

I dance a few inter-tribals and came back for my lunch of the best Indian Taco in the West (my opinion). A dancer was walking around with a couple wool purses/bags. They were just gorgeous. The embroidery was hand done and the construction was also hand sewn. You could tell that a lot of work went into these bags.

One of the tourists behind me asked how much. The dancer replied "A hundred." The tourist smiled and the dancer moved on. Then the entire 'Tourist Section' went on about how that was ridiculous and they wouldn't spend any more than $30 on something like that. $30 will get you a clearance machine made purse or bag that no doubt would be made in Veitnam or China.

We moved to another spot after this. I couldn't handle the remarks, the rattle of the China drum or the howling.

I guess they say that ignorance is bliss. I think it's just ignorant. My Mother always said that something is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. She also said never cut yourself short. Your time is worth every penny.

one thing is the sound system. i went to a pow wow back in 2008 and the host tribe was told the sound system needed to be replaced because of broken parts. well it was replaced, at the cost of making grand entry late - by 3 hours so they could replace parts of the sound system.

Sounds like that could be a major train wreck in the arena.

It bugs me a bit when I see people copy others colors, designs, footwork, symbols, etc. It's made even worse when the symbols and items they're copying aren't even a part of their society that they're claiming to represent.

At the powwow yesterday, there was this white guy sitting right in front of me and my friends during the hand drum special. He was snoring so loud that he could be heard over the drum and singing. Then during the next inter-tribal when he finally woke up right after the drum stopped, he leaned forward, lifted one leg slightly up and let the gas rip so loud that even the grandmothers on the other side of the arena turned their heads.

Wow that's bad when a fancy feather dancer rams you from behind and sent you flying into a couple of northern trad dancers. and I said never again these wrecks happen again so I got my hand on a Canada goose feather bustle.
