Well, to the victor goes the history books. Historical narratives and the dominant culture tend to view Native women through three lenses: Princess, Slut and Drudge. There are (too) many hundreds, maybe thousands, of murdered and missing Native women who've been crushed under this legacy.
If i remember correctly they called Native woman also "squaws".
Can you explain a little bit about that word.
I know they did'nt like to be called that way and i don't blame them.

Personally, I dislike it because of the cultural baggage the word carries. For me as a modern Native woman, that word brings to mind an entire complex of negative dominant culture preconceptions about women, women of color and native women in particular. What I wonder when people use it, is do they see me through that lens? Am I seen as: The fat, greasy cartoon caricature with a "papoose" strapped to my back, walking two steps behind my "buck". Or the scantly clad maiden, my buckskins slit to my hip, reclining on a bearskin, offering the promise of exotic non-white sex (maybe with a knife strapped to my thigh for a nice S&M touch). The word objectifies. It places me in a second class status.

If you doubt the accuracy of my perception of the associations with the word, do a Google image search on the word "squaw" minus the word "valley." Make sure the children are out of the room, because even with safe search on several images of bare breasted women in leather g-strings and headdresses may appear. You will be treated to a melange of images: White women clad in bits of ultrasuede that are smaller than a cocktail napkin, and festooned with dyed turkey feathers. Bad paintings of velveteen maidens reclining with their wolf by the stream. Cartoons of fat brown women with babes on their backs. Novel covers about "Squaw Men" lurid with the implications with the implication of danger associated with white men who have a taste for women of color. And a few photos of women in modern powwow regalia.

OlChemist, that is very. Interesting. I learned some time back that if you look at pics of Native American women you have to visually filter out all these warbonnet wearing scantily clad women that you really don’t want to see. The visitor women at pow wows wear very little sometimes but I revel in the lady dancers dressed so modestly. Of course, I realize that in hot climes all both sexes wore the minimal of skins.

A good 15 years ago, I attended a outdoor powwow at a local community center. There were no bleachers; it was strictly BYOC - bring your own chair. The grounds were fairly small and it was July in Texas. It was hot as h-e-double toothpicks. So, lots of folks had set up portable awnings.

I had gotten there early and picked out a nice spot, in the shadow of the building. Out of the way of the dancers but close enough to see. By the dinner time, the grounds were quite crowded. People were pretty much chair to chair. Except for one apparently prime strip to the south of the arena. All day I had been watching people set up chairs and within fifteen minutes pack up and flee the spot, which it turned out was fiercely defended by a colony of fire ants.

Just after grand entry, a non-Indian couple arrived with a blanket. They were biker types. He was clad in chaps and she was wearing a leather halter top and shorts. I've polished my car with larger scraps of chamois than were covering her breasts. They spread their blanket out on the edge of the clear area and sat down to watch. In less than 10 mins their interest in dancing was sated and they were engaged in a PDA that was progressing from PG-13 to R. The AD was just about to go get a firehose to separate them, when the woman leapt from a semi-recumbant position to running, tearing at her clothes. Her -- uh -- significant other stared blankly after her for about 30 secs, before the fire ant finally made it up his pant leg.

The powers don't take kindly in inappropriate behavior around the circle.

The important thing I learned about fire ants , in my 11 years living in Texas , was that they will swarm up on you and you may not realize it until it's too late ! They will crawl about.....several hundred and then they have some sort of communication system , because they will ALL start biting at the same time ! Not a pleasant experience !

In Florida and Georgia, one fire ant will bite first and if he decides it's fun, he calls the rest of 'em to come join him. A few days ago, I thought we had a new gopher tortise mound in the yard and walked out to see. It's the start of a fire ant hill. I threw some grits on it until we can get to Lowe's and get something to murder them with.

I never had "one" fire ant bite.........usually it was 300 !

I treated my yard at the first sign of fireants. I could always tell when my neighbors treated their fireants......You don't really kill them , you just move them next door !
