Whatcha' think about dressing people up and taking their picture?

I got a call today asking what I thought about a Native entrepeneur who wants to dress people up at a photo booth in Native period clothing and powwow outfits. For a fee this person will take their picture. It is similar to the black and white western outfit photo booths at state fairs and amusement parks.

Whatcha' think about this idea?

Sounds Awesome, a good way for families to gather for keepsake photos. Hmmm....

Here in Old Town San Diego the studios mostly do photos of Anglos in 1880 to 1910 attire, back when Wyatt Earp was Sheriff of San Diego.

and one photo shop seems to bring in Mexican/Latino people for dress-up in Mexican Revolution-era costumes with guns, tequila bottles, etc

This Old Town San Diego site used to be a Kumeyaay village name "Kosoy"

There used to be a shop to promote Kumeyaay culture in Old Town San Diego "Sha-mup ka-wup" (Dream Come True)

It closed down, not enough sales to pay for the rent space.

I don't see it as a particularly bad idea, regardless of whether the shop owner is Native.

1. We all know powwows are not inherently traditional (as existing).
2. We all know period clothing was just every day wear (as existed).

I don't see how anyone has a right to be upset...

If I could get folks to pay $$$ in order for me to dress them as 1860's Hillbilly-types for photography fun and profit, I'd presume only an 1860's hillbilly could truly claim rightful offense.

I'm lots of different tribes with post Western contact societal peaks spread out over about 100 years. Pick one of those tribes, across that time band, be dressed in common clothes of the period and pay me (or someone else) $50 for a ten minute photo?

That's no different than Halloween and I'd own a Rolex.

Cool beans.

I really don't care how someone makes his/her living. As far as pow-wow regalia is concerned , I think as long as they don't use real eagle feathers , I'm fine with it !

If he's making good $$$ off those photos and helps out the NDN family + community - it's for a good reason. Perhaps using a different kinds of regalia - outfits - solely made for this idea?

Not sure. I'm kinda' concerned about dressing any kid who can pay the price to dress in a jingle dress?

Some Natives pay a pretty good price to properly come into the powwow arena and have the right to wear their outfits.

How about an adding donation request of the adults and parents for supporting whatever whichever tribe needs? And without extra donation plus fee for pictures taken or else no pictures? And giving them donaters a flyer what the donated $$ will be used for?

So I guess this would be my questions...

With over 500 tribes in the U.S., which tribe's dress would you use?

How close to Society Dress would you make an outfit for someone to wear? The Mandan headdress comes to mind?

Would you use the wear of an Apache crown dancer?

or,

Would the business person/vendor just John Wayne them?

You know...the fringed outfit of the 1800's with the Thunderbird motif? Minnetonka moccasins? The big chief (not Big Chef or cheif) headdress? Leather headband?

What if the entrepreneur took a photos of wardancer's Tradish outfit, WhoMe's Fancy Outfit, ojibwaysweetie's Jingle Dress, copied them to real outfits...and sold photo sessions for $10,000 a show? (sorry. Got carried a way at the end and quoted a Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show song. hahahaaa)

This was the scenario that came to my mind.

What if it was done in the Southwest? Would they only use the Apache and Navajo dress and leave the Pueblo tribes out?

What do you think?

I think I don't care.

I don't mean that in any dismissive or aloof manner, I just truly don't. At all. Being afraid of this is submitting to the idea that they're, somehow, stealing our souls with a photo.

As simply as I can put it, there's nothing inherently special about what we wear beyond who wears it. Outfits denote who bears certain status by virtue of being able to wear them but they do not give you status merely by putting them on. (Nor do you lose the status if you are in jeans.)

1. If I wear a Green Bay Packers outfit -- complete with pads, safety equipment and my name on the back -- am I an NFL player?

2. If Peyton Manning goes to get a beer in cargo shorts, is he not?

While I reject the theory that powwows are meaningful or traditional, I buy WhoMe's idea that some folks have sacrificed significantly in order to garner respect there.

But we're not talking about dressing folks for the arena or putting my zero athleticism posterior in an NFL game.

This is just a picture that some nincompoops are willing to pay for.

I don't see an issue.

I can respect your stand on this question. It would be your decision to put on lederhosen and those cute little suspender shorts to take a photo...if that was your desire. Nothing wrong with that.

Do you think there is somewhere to draw the proverbial line when it comes to cultural exploitation?

I'm sure there will be nincompoops willing to pay to dress like an 'Indian' and take their pic.

Good post, Zeke.
