Wikipedia: Pow Wow

I took a look at Wikipedia page for "Pow Wow" Does it need updating?

Pow wow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about Native American gatherings.

A pow wow (also powwow, pow-wow or pau wau[1]) is a gathering of some of North America's Native people. The word derives from the Narragansett word powwaw, meaning "spiritual leader".[2] A similar gathering by California Native Peoples usually in the fall is called a Big Time.

A modern pow wow is a specific type of event for Native American/First Nations people to meet and dance, sing, socialize, and honor Native American/First Nations culture. Pow wows may be private or public. There is generally a dancing competition, often with significant prize money awarded. Pow wows vary in length from a one day event, to major pow wows called for a special occasion which can be up to one week long.

I actually wrote the Grass dance and Straight dance articles, and cleaned up Fancy. The hardest part about writing and touching up these articles is finding credible sources for everything.

I also worked trying to get a decent gallery of pictures going over in Wikimedia Commons. Here's the Grass dance gallery. The hard part there is all the pictures have to be free. Luckily I was able to find some pictures from the National Pow Wows taken by a Smithsonian photographer so those all counted.

An article on Northern Trad is still listed in the navbox at the bottom of the page and unwritten yet if anyone wants to jump in.

And, no offense to you Mr. Tenneseean, this is the problem. Wiki is full of these amateurs who write this stuff that have no place doing it, then others come in and edit it, and it goes from bad to worse.

No offense taken! I'm definitely no expert on the subject. I don't think the main problem is that the authors are all amateurs, but instead I think underlying problem is that there are very few credible sources that are actually up-to-date. For example, I've personally never heard of the Grass Dance referred to as the Omaha Dance, but that's what a peer-reviewed anthropology journal called it in the 50s so that made it in the article.

actually the problem is knowing how to read, evaluate, and critique source materials. Obviously Jim Howard's stuff from the 1950 will use terms differently and must be understood within their context, but the basic amateur unfortunately does not have access to recent excellent source materials.

It does need update for the modern day competition powwow.

No mention of "Spotlight Dance" just for starters.

Traditional Vs. Contemporary?

Polish Powwows?

I always check the sources listed in the Wiki, then do a few Googles around that source to see what else is available to read.

Thanks for the responses on this thread, brought out the professional lurkers with this one

Most often at First Nations Powwows where I used to live on Manitoulin Island in Canada would lasted 2 to 3 days. I have never see one day or one whole week. That is unheard of.

Very rarely would you find powwows being indoors as I attended the powwows outdoors often as long as there is no storm or rain depending on the weather.

Yeah, I had noticed when I was looking for something in Wikipedia and often I see some edited to verified or corrected the information. Often time this was not correctly right in the information. Every one is different in their opinion.

Anadarko Indian Fair is a week , and Crow Fair. I'm sure there are more.

The powwow in Austin , Tx. is the largest 1 day indoor competition powwow in the country ! I have attended many 1 day dances .

We still used outdoor traditional powwow grounds all over Manitoulin Island in Canada. If there was rain or storms coming, the announcement would send people to go to the building like the ice rink place or the complex building which is big enough for people to come for powwow dancing. We don't like to cancel the powwows. There are times if the band office don't have the building big enough for the powwow inside, then there is no choice that they have to cancel the powwow and will try it the next day if there is no storm.

Here in New Mexico, there are other powwows outdoors in other areas beside Albuquerque where the Gathering of Nations has the "Pit" which has a basketball court so all the competition dancers were performing for the prizes.

On First Nation (Manitoulin Island) They do have a complex building for New Year's Day which was not that many people coming to celebrate New Year instead of ice rink building.

To me, the "Pit" is the only building that most competition dancers for the Gathering Of Nations were using to perform their prize traditional dances. That was the only place where I used to visit it in Albuquerque.

I have not gone to other powwows that were in the building except if there is some of the powwows for Winter time. It is too cold and also don't want to have snow on their moccasins. You don't want to get them all soak wet.

Just my opinion for reason why they chose the building to have powwows.
windanncer and Spiritflight like this.
