Best mic for drum and singers.

I've seen mics hanging down on drums but I never thought I would need to know what is the best type. I'm looking at choir microphones but I don't think I've ever seen anyone else using one. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. I bought a PA system for the drum my son plays with and now I'm lost.

i have used all types of mics through the years, but found that for me, the Sennheiser G2 handheld wireless mics are the best for drums. They will "cut" through layers of dancers during grand-entries from more than 300 feet away. Other wireless mics I used would fizzle out once bodies block the direct line of path to the receiver attennas.

When the FCC took over the 700-800 MHz frequency band, I had to get new mics to replace the banned ones. I tried the new G3 but they just don't work as well as the G2s. Luckily, I have extra G2 wireless systems in the 500-600 and 600-700 ranges so I can continue to use those.

For the MCs, I have four plug-on wireless transmitters that you can use with any handheld wired mic (Shure 58s, Sennheiser 835s, Audix D4s, etc.). Normally, you would want to use handheld mics with off/on switches because the mute buttons are not too convenient on the plug-ons.

This way, I can set up my sound equipment area away from the congestion around the MC stand and the host drum canopies. When used in Pilot mode, you can monitor battery strength on the receivers. However, be prepared to pay good money for the wireless systems.

TT, I have a couple of Carvin mikes for you. Maybe we can test them at Parker?

I met with Carvin sound pros, they recommend Carvin M90S unidirectional condenser microphone, perfect for percussion sounds off drums.

Carvin.com : M90S UNIDIRECTIONAL CONDENSER MICROPHONE

Would like to try them on cables first, before investing in dongles and transmitters.

Carvin.com : UXMC16 HAND HELD MIC TRANSMITTER

We'll do that. The wide frequency range of 30Hz to 20kHz sounds incredible!

This is the Sennheiser plug-on: Sennheiser SKP 300 G3 - Microphone - Plug-on transmitter - wired - wireless

It can be used with condenser and dynamic microphones with its XLR-3F connector (eliminates visual interference of cables).

Then I may as well just mail these Carvin mikes to you, more time to evaluate before your next gig.

Years ago I was all about Shure products. The SM58 is still my favorite and choice dynamic wired mic. Recently I've become a huge fan of Sennheiser. I use the G3 systems all the time at work and they are fantastic. The other plus to the Sennheisers is the fact that they use AA batteries and not 9 volt batteries like the Shure's and they still last all day.

TT - a while ago I was on a shoot and borrowed gear from my friend and he gave me his older Azden wireless mics, these are the type that mount to the back of professional cameras and I didn't realize until I got there that they were the type that was operating on the frequencies that the FCC took away so I was receiving the most annoying and strangest sounds from them. It's a shame too because they were nice mics and they do still work well in areas where the airwaves aren't so polluted - unfortunately where I live and work the airwaves are heavily saturated. In fact our local ABC station can't broadcast at full power their digital signal over the air because of how bad the airwaves are saturated.

LOL turn those on along the southern border and you will get a pilot trying to land a plane, a cab driver looking for a fare, and a wife calling her husband to bring home a dozen eggs

Whoever screams the loudest wins!

I was notified earlier that I was a no-go for the Gallup Ceremonial, but it sounds like I'm back on again (new board of directors).

The Ceremonial is five weeks away. Sizzortail and Black Lodge are the Host Drums with a night of round dancing on Thursday night.

Off again!! The coordinator pushed hard, but the board of directors are very stingy even though they added an extra day to the powwow.
