Drum Contest

For drum contest, it seems that it's usually drum groups participating. However, I know sometimes you'll see some guys come together to sing in contest if their group isn't singing or if they aren't a part of a group.

So for those who go to a lot of contests, do the drum groups generally sing their "own" songs or other songs that are just out there? It would seem that for drums that don't generally sing together, they probably wouldn't have any of their own songs. Do judges generally favor a group singing their own songs or other songs that might be on the drum?

Just curious to know what happens out in powwow country especially west of the Mississippi.

If you ask me, as long as you can make a pretty sound...sing something appropriate & keep some order of consistency, you are alright!

This weekend there was a drum roll call special contest- about half an hour before each grand entry the whole drum had to be there and one singer would do a bit out of a song- someone did a Johnny Cash song, another did "You're a queen to me" (out of eddie murphy's 'coming to america') someone else did Marvin Gaye I think.
it was good times. Good enough that before they would pay out they made them do it again.

I think depends where you are and what pow-wow you are attending. I been to some pow-wows were drums weren't even singing the right song for thier contest. So I would say in some cases yes.

I agree with Nakota. It depends where you are and what powwow you are attending.

At the mega powwows, there is no doubt that the well known drum groups are singing their own tunes during the drum contest. The major drum groups have their own songs for whatever occasion they are asked to sing.

My old drum had our own original songs for, veterans, jingle dress, straight dance, grass dance, ruffle dance ... everything!

The drum that I sing with now, sings popular songs composed by other singers. At the powwows we compete at, the judges don't take singing other peoples songs into consideration. They just listen for an appropriate drum beat, good leads and a unified, strong sound.

I think it depends on the size of the powwow...if its a smaller powwow, thrown together drums sing other groups songs. I dont mind it, as long as they dont BUTCHER the song or sing the wrong kind of song. Singers who throw drums together should be careful if they using other drums word songs (contemporary), cuz they could be saying something completely different then what it is intended and also could be singing a womans tradish for a mens fancy.
I know also it doesnt happen to much nowadays, but I was always taught if your gonna borrow a song, get permission from the drum that sang it. yes there is "universal" songs out there that EVERYONE sings, and thats cool, but if your taking a modern song fresh from another group, get permission 1st...I've seen drums demand something from other drums at a powwow a few times for not asking to use that song, especially when the drum your borrowing from is at the same powwow...and the penalty CAN BE STIFF!!! so be carefull out there!
