Need info: Pow Wows Songs

Hi, I need some information about songs sing in the Pow Wow as well as the drums.

Does individual tribe has own song and drum? if so what are they? and how to distiguish between one tribe and others?

I am writing a short research for my class. So glad to find this site. I wonder if you know Native American community around Victor Valley - Inland Empire.

I do appreciate your help.

Welcome Senja,

Do you live in Victorville, Calif? Each Spring around Mother's Day there is a big pow wow called Mother Earth Powwow at the Narrows Park in Victorville. Check YouTube for videos.

Each tribe has its own cultures and traditions, as well as language. Humans lived in North America going back 10,000 years, or more, singing and dancing has been part of life here way before european contact.

The "powwow" culture originated amongst the Plains area tribes - Southern Plains middle of USA then also up to the Northern Plains into what is now Canada.

Where you live near Inland Empire in California the Native people developed "Bird Singing" and Bird Dancing. No drum, the hand-held gourd rattle is used for rhythm.

The Natives near Victorville are San Manuel tribe, Morongo, 29 Palms, Cabazon, Cahuilla, Soboba, and more to the north. Powwow is not their historical background, but modern years has seen powwow culture expanding...almost everywhere. Some Natives powwow dance now, even though it is not what their own tribe did 100 years ago.

Now, distinguishing between tribes takes time to recognize the different cultures, manner of dressing, (regalia) language, singing, dancing etc. You can find 1,000 or more different tribal cultures across Canada, USA, and Mexico.

Need Info: Pow Wows Songs and Drums

AmigoKumeyaay, thanks for your fast response.

Yes I live in Victorville, just moved here couple years ago.

I did not realized that I would have hundred of pages to write about Pow Wows musics (song, drum and dance), considering hundred of Tribes living in the US. Now, I have to limit to the tribes in Southern California or Inland Empire only.

You mentioned the Bird Song and Bird Dancing as the traditional song and dance of Inland Empire Native. I will look further about it. Thanks for your info.

I am able to drive down to Highland or Morongo. Do you have any idea where to stop to get some pictures of the drums and customs they may have for public displays?

Thanks again.

The Native tribes of California will not have drums. Here are some links:

Lightbulb Clappersticks

In addition to the gourd rattle some southern California tribes, such as the Chumash, will use clappersticks. They are made from cut elderberry branches. This site has a drawing of one, if you want to see.
