my grandmas Grandma on my dads side of the family is Part Cherokee so what does that make me?Someone in the family tree would have to be Fullblooded for her to be part?I dont understand I know I have Cherokee blood in me and I just recently found out about having Choctaw in me as well just dont know how much it gets confusing to me?if anyone has any advice for me let me know.I dont think my Aunt researched our heritage and ancestry right shes telling me I am 1/64 Cherokee but dont me having Choctaw in me make the percentage a Little higher than that and plus if theres no such thing as 1/64 Indian. Please help I am all together confused now.

Theoretically, there's such a thing as 1/∞ Indian.
But have have to be able too provide evidence of the one. |

There are 3 Federally Reocognized Cherokee Tribes Each have a slightly different way to Determine Citizenship, Culture we will talk about later 1)Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma uses the Final Rolls of the 5 Civilized Tribes and Freedman. You must trace from you to a Lineal Descendant that was listed on the Dawes Rolls through what is called primary documents such as Birth and Death Certificates. No minimum Blood Quantum is Required for Citizenship 2)Keetoowah Band of Cherokee of Oklahoma, the tribe uses the same roll as Cherokee Nation but also uses the Final Roll of the Keetoowahs of 1947, you must petition the Tribal council for Enrollment and must have a minimum of 1/4 degree of Cherokee Blood. 3) Eastern Band of Cherokees are based in North Carolina they are descendants of those that were left in North Carolina after the removal was enforced in 1838-39. They use the Baker Roll which was done in 1924 and use much the same criteria for Lineal Descendant and they have a minimum blood quantum of 1/8th Lets Do a History Lesson on Citizenship Prior to 1900 Cherokee Indians were not Citizens of the United States and thus were not subject to the laws of the States or Territories that they happen to reside in. This is why the United States entered into Treaties with the different tribes on a Government to Government Basis. So if you were an Indian and you RESIDED with your tribe and spoke the language of your tribe you were counted as an Indian and you were not subject to various taxes and laws that other citizens were. This is also why you will not find on any census prior to 1900 INDIANS listed as Race unless they were intermarried and were not living with there tribe and in those cases were usually listed as white along with the entire household. Now this has created many many arguments regarding these peoples and should they be counted as Indian. I will not go into to that here just the facts as they are TODAY... Now comes the Next big thing: The United States Government has always left up to the Tribal Government to DETERMINE who is a Citizen and Who is not. In some cases with smaller tribes the BIA kept the Rolls and kept track of that and with larger tribes they did it themselves such as with the Cherokees they have kept there own Records. Cherokees have kept Census records since the 1850's of all of our members and decendants and is a fact of record the Final Rolls of the Cherokee Nation was BASED on the 1896 and 1880 Cheorkee Census. Now that we have background and definition we can jump into your case Grandmothers Grandmother was part Cherokee So here is how its determined Say this GGGGrandmother is 1/2 Cherokee and is indeed listed on the Final Rolls of the Cherokee Nation which meant she physically lived amongst the Cherokee in Indian Territory and would have shown up on either the 1896 or 1880 Roll that was done by the Cherokee tribe thus her own tribe recognized her as such and she was still living when the rolls were done it is a simple matter of looking her up on the Dawes Index. By the way her Children would have been listed also! So its simple you must trace from you to your Dad to his mom to her mom and to her mom in an unbroken line to the person that is listed on the Final Rolls. As for Blood Quantum its simple Fractions you take blood from you Maternal Side and your Paternal Side and add it up, if there is only Indian Blood on one side its even simplier. 4/4 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16 1/32 1/64 so a 64th is 6 generations from a fullblood. Understand though no Tribe allows enrollment in more than one tribe... Eastern Cherokee is much the Smae they would have to have been living and roecognized as a member of the Tribe when the did the 1924 Baker Roll |

So what a guy has a question, that is why he asked. He didn't come off with stupidity like most folks here when they want to become instant NDN's, and your tirade of ignorance is the reason that the real "Wannabes" make up their own traditions, stories and history, because they don't want to be treated like that right out of the shoot. I bet you've never thought about how your own actions and responses to "white" people have furthered the very thing that p!sses you off. CS, yes someone had to be full blood, the easiest way to figure this out is to trace your family history back that's really the only way, a lot of times families have stories, and that is all they are stories. Also it's not uncommon for a person who is Cherokee to also be Choctaw, as they reside together in the same area. good luck |

Yes I am, I like to defend folks who get jumped on by colossal douchebags who think they have a right to answer question that are not addressed to them, about things they know nothing about. You sure are a crap stirring, wind bag who seems to have diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain! Shall I go on or do you want to just give up now before I embarrass the hell out of you? You're a newbie, stick to the games and get to know folks first, don't come out the starting gate with foam and rabid, especially when answering a question that wasn't directed at you, it just makes your white easier to see. |

You didn't answer the question... So after you find out you're Indian, 6 generations removed, what are you? Mayhem is everywhere. To the moderators of this board: I made a comment. Never in anger, never in malice. I am not here to fight and argue. I apologize for the other member's outburst. I will not continue in this tirade. BTW It's 'chute', not 'shoot'. Okay boys, back to your corners.
Mayhem, sucking up to the moderators doesn't grant you any dispensation. I suggest you re-read the forum rules and FAQs. Rerazed, watch the language. I'm not in the mood to edit to keep this PG.

I would love to say something funny here to relieve the tension, but I have the flu and my brain isn't working at high speed with a full deck, so I will just say, "Hey guys and gal!" and Josiah,I thought the Cherokee Nation Eastern Band cutoff was 1/4 blood quantum. Was that recently changed, or was I just mistaken?

I'm sure you lack capacity to understand them.
Read? Pray tell, which? Mostly just in your mirror. Afraid of a little scrutiny, are you? Just like your pervasive -- and obvious -- lack of intelligence. |

Now to the other posters on this thread.
If you want to start a peeing match with a skunk and find out the skunk is really a big, old, cranky, grizzly bear, do not expect any "backup" from the mods to get you out of a fight. Whining for people to leave you alone after you take shots at other posters isn't going to get you a lot of sympathy. If you don't like what the person has said, then ignore them. It's just that simple.
