Cool forum. Ancestry.com has a free 14 day membership...just don't forget to cancel on day 13.

They've added many reservation census records. So get on there and print EVERYTHING you can in 2 weeks.

Of course you can't believe everything you read there. I think some of my relatives from other reservations said they were half Shoshone on the census so they could stay here. The ages are all over the place too. And misspellings. And even the relationships get foggy.

On the Arapaho census from the Wind River Rez, they put the English translation down and what it was "anglisized" to, and/or what English name they were given. On the Shoshone census, it shows the name in Shoshone and what it means in English. All very interesting!!

Okay, I've seen that website before and be very careful of it. It's not as accurate as some may think. I don't recomend it and didn't list it as one of my favorite websites in my book. There's alot of goofey and misleading info on this site. I've been in it a few times and looked around and I've been keeping an eye on it here and there to see if it gets better. Just letting you know.

So much for my enthusiasm, lol.

So where is a better link to the rolls?

What about this one?

Yes the Guion Miller Rolls, but just remember that just because someone's name appears there doesn't mean that they were actually accepted for that roll. Especially with Guion Miller many of the applications were rejected and so finding someone's name doesn't actually mean anything unless they were actually accepted and then it should list their ancestor's, but if not it really doesn't always give that much info.

Not trying to bring you down here, just trying to let you know the truth.

Oh no for the rolls it's okay, but they have other info on it that you have to watch out for. Most people go in and start looking at the rolls or census, but then start looking at the other info they have and I'll tell you what, I've looked at it and well it's just not all that good some of the stoies are really weird.

There are a few sites for Rolls, just which ones are you looking for? The national archives has a website and I think you can look at the list of Rolls there too.

Yep, that's a good source right there 'cause it's the actual copy of what the National Archives has. I have that whole list on a CD and it's identical to what is there in the screen you posted.

Okay. Well, I think you know I am not after a CDIB card. I just want to trace that branch of my family. If it doesn't lead there, at least I will know, and I can move on to wherever it does lead me. I am not trying to prove anything, but discover the truth. All I have to go on is family history and whatever I have been able to dig up in the way of records.

Don't worry. I am prepared to accept the truth. It will just be a bit discombobulating. It's unnerving to think you are Irish and to discover that you are Chinese, to use a far-fetched example. But that has happened to me a few times already.

Oh there's nothing wrong with wanting to know I'm all for it and you know that. I love what I do and what I find. And family stories are always fun to listen to. But when looking on some of these sites just stick with the federal and county records (as you were the rolls), but going beyond that into the peoples branches and stories can and will mess you all up even worse especially if they don't have or list where they got the info. Alot of times it's really out there. The stories are fun to read, but just know where they come from. I tend to use county history books for the stories, and yes nothing is ever totally accurate, there's always some mix up, but they are fun and usually the stories are obtained like a generation or two later not 5 or 6 when all kinds of other stuff has been added and changed. Also, old newspapers are awesome finds, they are really fun to read.

Not trying to let you down, just actually glad you found it. If you know which one might be your's I might actually have that app information here.

Well, it has been a slow, uphill battle just to get where I am in my search. It took me years to find out Phoebe's last name. So far, all the evidence I have, suggests that it is correct, but who knows? I need more records. I need an actual birth record and a marriage record and a death record for her, but all I find so far are census records, and other people's research which I need to verify if I can.

One of my cousins is also researching this line now, thank goodness. I think I was all alone up to now.

I need to find records of Phoebe's parents and siblings so I can trace down to the people on that roll, if they are indeed my relatives. Correct? That will probably take me a few years, unless I am lucky.

Thanks for your help, Timmy.

Oh, and the stories are from my grandma. So they aren't really that old. I guess that is encouraging?

It shouldn't take a couple of years unless finances are an issue. If you found her on census' and if I remember right she's like 3 generations back. Well, the last census that you find her on (if it was before 1930) contact that county clerks office or the Vital records office and see if they have a death cert on her. And then if she was married in that county they should also have those records as well and many times after the 1850's it will list her parents, not always but many times, and the marriage records are held in the County Clerks office of where the persons got married and then just go backwards from there. It's actually fairly easy and doesn't really take all that long unless there's secrets or something that someone wanted to hide and not always what people think either.

BTW, I'm not sure where she was married. It may have been North Carolina or it may have been Virginia. All I know is she was born in North Carolina, but I don't know the county. She married a Sexton, probably in N.C. or Virginia, and she had my great-great-grandpa in Virginia, then she died there. I know the county of my great-great grandpa's birth, and the county where Phoebe died. That's it.

Sorry if I'm driving you nuts with my denseness.

Sorry if I'm driving you nuts with my denseness.
Not at all. Well first of all VA is a closed record state and you have to be a direct line relation to get records from there and they do have an applicaton and you must show ID to get any info from them. Now, if it was before 1908, they might have some kind of death record or notice, but not a death cert like we know today. And if it was before 1908 they will have it in the County Clerks office or a listing of a WILL, now that will have info too. Or by finding a cemetery record. Now for where she was married, being you know where she was born and where her first child was born. There's two places to look right there. Again, go to the census records, for example if she was born in 1872, look at the 1880 census records where her parents were and see if she's on that census with them. If she is, got the the 1870 census and find where her parents were living at that time and if it's the same county and state it's a good chance that she was born in that county and state. Not always is this the case though, sometimes when people were visiting family away from home--yup births happened, but for the most part it's a good chance. And then see where your ggg-grandfather was born (her husband) if it's different from where she was born, then you have a possibility of 3 places to look for a marriage record, it's a start anyway. And sometimes they just up and went somewhere totally off the wall just for the fun of it and oh those are nuts to track down.LMAO But it still can be done.

Well, you have a good start knowing the info you know.

Birth and death records are usually about $10 each for a certified copy. Being that this was before 1908, there probably won't be a certificate, but there might be some kind of record. And marriage records, it all depends on the state and county, I've seen them for $5 each and as high as $15, but not more then that really.

Sorry. Took a break to eat a late lunch.

Timmy Tiger, will you be selling your book in September? If so, I would like to buy a copy then.

Got to take my dog to have her stitches out. I'll check back here later.
