Hey Okwataga!

This is great, isn't it?

Okay, I have traced my dad's family line back to Charles Sexton (b. 1780, I don't know where, but probably N.C. or Va., d. 1844 in Va.) and Phoebe E. Sexton, nee Green (b. ca. 1788? in N.C., d. 1870 in Va.) It is possible that her father was one Bartlett Green. That I have not been able to verify yet. Her birth date is listed as around 1788, but her age at death in 1870 was listed as 88, which would make her birth date around 1782, I believe.

Their son, Charles W. Sexton was born in Russell County, Va. in 1823 or 1824. He was married to Matilda Dye, born about 1829 in Va. in Washington county.

Their daughter was Mary Elizabeth Sexton, who married William (Haywood) Taylor, an Irish immigrant orphan adopted by the Taylor family, no relation.

I posted a photograph of my great-grandparents in my family album.

According to my grandma, who was William and Mary's daughter, Mary and all her family were Cherokee.

Which is what brought me here.

That's about all I have so far. I got most of my information (dates and places) from census records, and some information (names and ethnic origins and the like) from my dad's sister.

I was just looking at this site:

Native American Data

and I noticed that nearly all the Sextons are Choctaw. However, the Greens are a mix of nearly every tribe that begins with "C", Chickasaw, Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, and the few Dye's listed are mostly Cherokee, but also Creek and Choctaw.

Not sure if that means anything to me, but it is interesting.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that I am Japanese. That's okay. I'm a Japanese Wannabe anyway. I'm going to start making my kimono and learn the tea ceremony. Oh yes...and the fine art of butt-bumping. Look out Timmy T, if you don't want to fall off that bench!

Paul, this is a very good thing youve done. I personally pray that this Forum stays civil and the Know all SKINS don't come in here to start card dropping those who are simply wanting to research their family.

Timmy Tiger, it is good to here about your new book, Congrats.

I have one bit of info that everyone needs to think about. This is especially for all the Dawes enrolled families. Remember that if you can locate your blood line Aunts and Uncles and your Mom and/or Dad didn't enroll you are not eligible for the enrollment yourself. Your Cuzs can but not you. I don't aggree with this personally but just how it is. I do understand that there are exceptions to every rule but this is simply in general.

Thank you Cherosage.

This forum is about us all helping each other. But see now I've had a totally different experience then what you are talking about. I've heard of it, but not really seen it.

Even in my own life the "skins" all come to me and ask me to help someone out. This has happened many many times and even in some of their own families they've asked me to look something up for them and I usually do. And even with many who are tribal member's, many people want to know and they get really interested in their family history.

Recently I was asked by someone on a res who was contacted on another site by someone with the same last name. And this person on the res wanted to know if they could be related. So I had all the info and gave it to them, when and who their first ancestor was with that last name and who else had that last name and where and things like that.

I have found that the "Skins" are just as helpful to those truly looking as anyone else.

The problem that I've seen more of is some who use made up stories to claim they are something. I've found that more then once and most of the time I either know the family line or the descendants and the stories just don't jive with the history. Now that's when some people get upset is when they know the history or families involved and then all heck breaks loose. But hopefully we won't have that here.

Thanks for this information, Cherosage. Personally, I'm not looking to enroll, but that should be helpful knowledge for those who might be.

Timmy Tiger and/or Okwataga, I have a question for you:

Is it possible to get birth records from North Carolina if you only have a name, and a birth year range, because that's all I really have for Grgrgrgrandma Phoebe. Surely there must have been more than one Phoebe E. Green born in North Carolina in that time period. If so, would they send me all the records?

Okay, I just re-read some of your previous posts, T.T. I think I am starting at the wrong end, maybe. I'll try looking in Virginia for Phoebe's marriage and/or death records. I have more information on Phoebe's life in Virginia than her life in N.C.

As for Family Names among the Cherokees

While doing family research
I have found that Family Names were not very common untill the mid 1850's
Basically before that you could call yourself pretty much anything you wanted
Most would have several Cherokee Names and sometimes only one English name
So the Idea that certain names like Green would be associated with one tribe is hard to beleive
Perhaps after the 1900's when it was more common to have Sir names

A good example of this is my GGGGrandfather

His name was
Ummatuskee
Askwater
YonaQuah
And Bigbear Askwater

On the depends on which roll you looked at 1851 one name
1880 census another
and when his daughter was asked what her Father's name was she said
Askwater this was on the Miller Guinon roll of 1910
He died in 1893 so he would not have been on the Dawes Rolls
and during the Civil War on the Muster Rolls he used Askwater
But all of his Kids used the sir name Ummertuskee
but he never did

Point is
What is in a name
I have found my name was also a common Cherokee name

Josi
pronounced: Jo-sigh with no last name
not Jo-see

Some were literal translation of the Head of Household's Cherokee name
Such as
Dirteater kept Dirteater
Squirrel Flopper most common now is just Squirrel (lots of friends with this last name)
PumpkinPile Now just Pumpkin
Deer-in-the-water which today is Deerinwater
LongHairs are just Hairs

Yeah, those are interesting when you find them and have to track who came from who.

But here's another thing for the states that had NDN's and the Federal Census', OK didn't have the Federal Census until 1900, the 1880 was just the one for the Cherokee Nation other Tribes might have had one too, but not the whole state of OK, when looking up any name, not just NDN names, you have to be careful and make sure you know what you are looking for. Remember back then many people couldn't spell and they especially couldn't spell NDN names. So on one document it could read one way and on another it oculd real another (or even from census to census), not the name being different but the spelling depending on who the census taker was at the time.

Yeah Neling, work your way backwards. So if she died in VA and you know when (even an approx) and where then start there and go backwards to find the rest about her.

Great books here Josaih.

I know of Emmet Starr's and even have it and it's a good informative book.

I didn't know about that other one, but am interested.

I wannabe Okwataga and Timmy Tiger's cousin.

I found Phoebe's death record in Virginia, and it told me nothing I didn't already know, except that she died of old age.

Given the age discrepancy, I am wondering if there were two Phoebe Sexton's in Russell county, but I have only found one death record so far.

how big a discrepency??

i know when my g gpa died they said he was over 100

but some things stated he was in his 90's......

if the names on the cert match up to the other family members that you know then you are on the right track....
just keep going... or try a different track.... find a cousin and go backwards....

:)

so I have a cousin named Neling now - AWESOME~!!!!!!!

Six years, Okwataga. She was either born in 1788 or 1782 or maybe somewhere in the middle.
