European Conquer

The only reason European's Conquer Northern America was because of the Musket. When the Musket was invented the only place in history that was ever attacked was North America, Not China, Italy, or the Middle East.

103,

Wrooooong!

The musket was not to blame. Trust was to blame.

Native people helped the Europeans survive on this continent because of blind trust in their fellow human beings. At the time, Natives far out numbered the Europeans and could have easily overwhelmed them at our shores, regardless of muskets.

Then there would have been no one to go back to Europe and tell of the untold richness of the New World.

Focus on the future, we will all be speaking Spanish in "North America".

Somebody else is taking over.

Comedian Charles Sanchez did a routine about his cousin from Mexico working as 911 operator here in the U.S. - pretty funny stuff.

But wait til the 2010 census numbers come out -

or just read the side of my Official U.S. Cesus Coffee Mug "Esta En Nuestras Manos" (It's in our Hands)

I'm all for a Tibetan revolt (if it would do any good), but they're posting from Canada.

Although this person's posts seem robotic at times, I think they have some good ideas and just need a little netiquette to polish them up.

It is alittle odd that a number is used like that but whatever, we all can use the "ignore" button. Beautiful baby, BTW.....I'm the proud mama of five.

On the issue of the horse... there is evidence of a species of Equus existing in the Yukon/Alaska up until about 10,000 years ago.

Quote:
In recent years, molecular biology has provided new tools for working out the relationships among species and subspecies of equids. For example, based on mutation rates for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Ann Forstén, of the Zoological Institute at the University of Helsinki, has estimated that E. caballus originated approximately 1.7 million years ago in North America. More to the point is her analysis of E. lambei, the Yukon horse, which was the most recent Equus species in North America prior to the horse's disappearance from the continent. Her examination of E. lambei mtDNA (preserved in the Alaskan permafrost) has revealed that the species is genetically equivalent to E. caballus. That conclusion has been further supported by Michael Hofreiter, of the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, who has found that the variation fell within that of modern horses.
On the conquest issues, while Americans assume the Indigenous peoples were conquered, First Nations is Canada do not make that assumption. Our treaties are still in effect and provide the basis for increasing land claim settlement, hunting and fishing rights and self government.

The conquering of a people requires a specific criteria of events to take place of which none if them occurred in Canada. While it is common for oppressors to include the propaganda of a conquered people in their rhetoric to justify their actions, First Nations argue vehemently that they are not conquered - hence the usage of First Nation.

On the issue of armour... many First Nations had their own armour and it was effective. Tlingits are known for their body armour styles.

Europeans had tactical and strategic war plans that did not include close combat - they were, in the mid 1500s still using fortress and siege tactics. We on the other hand, used close combat, pyschops and land knowledge. They adjusted read The Prince, Tsu Sun. Von Clauswitz and Jomini for examples - we, on the other hand did not adapt fast enough. (as a side note, it burns my butt when people refer to the notion that we simply were outgunned for the reason we were "conquered". If one studies the art of war, one would find that war/attack/ tactics and strategies of the various tribes were amazingly detailed and consistent in their application. When a person assumes that we were outgunned, they negate that but a very few nations, we are a warrior culture. You don't get to be considered that unless one has the gonads to actually engage in war.

While new agers continue to propagate that First Nations were all lovey dovey and communing with bluebirds and trees, those of us that know our histories and people acknowledge that for some of us, our people were of the warrior culture. Peace treaties do not indicate that we were the people of those stereotypes created by national holidays like Thanksgiving but rather a force required to be held to peaceable terms. We did not need the peace treaties, the Europeans needed them.

Give that some thought...

Its the same with the nations in Mexico, Central and South America as well. I don't believe we were ever conquered.

Even though we speak spanish, its just a common language similar to english, but we have our own languages that are still widely spoken, our traditions and culture still thriving. I don't consider myself originating from spanish origins or english ones but I speak both.
