I Found out I'm Native American...Help?

Hi, I'm new here (Just registered today.) My family immigrated from Portugal before I was born, and I was always told that I was full blooded Portuguese. Recently I've been asking questions and doing research, and I found out my grandmother was adopted. She originally came from Massachusetts and is Native American. I had doubts of this, so I took a DNA test, and sure enough, It came back, and I was Native American. Since I've lived pretty much a lie, would anyone please fill me in on Native American information, and maybe help me find what tribe I'm from? Thanks.

Didn't come back 26%?

To find out if you're from a tribe, ask your family on grandma's side.

Try to get family papers and official documents within your family. Birth certificates, death certificate, marriage certificate, ...

If you know where your grandma lived when she was adopted, there should be papers of adoption within the legal system.

I'm glad to see you already know tribal identity is key, and that there is no generic Native American. This is a good start. Many who come here do not seem to be aware of even this.

SNP's do not an Indian make. There is no genetic memory. Native identity -- like all human cultural associations -- is created within the framework of kin and community. It grows on language, geography, spirituality and shared history. It is learned not inborn.

I say this not to shut you out, but to give hope. Once you do the leg work and find your kin, if you approach with a humble heart and a spirit of service you can learn.

LOL. You make it sound like you just learned the secret handshake and now you want the decoder ring. Friendly teasing aside, what do you want to know?

If you go out hunting for official documents, be prepared that it is not to be an easy road to travel.

You need patience, perseverance, tenacity and not to forget some luck.

May you of all enough to succeed.

Hi, sorry I haven't replied in almost a month, It's been busy. So I got some books from the library and found that Where my grandmother's family is from was near where the Wampanoags lived. Also, is there a specific website I could look for documents on?
