Seriously c-mom, I'm with you. I'd like to hear how can you claim to have something and not even know where to start looking? Aren't you supposed to look before you start claiming something?

It's good you admit to knowing nothing...but instead of assuming anything else, you need to do some research.

Start making a family tree with yourself and work backwards.

More than likely, but not necessarily. Say the average age in your family is to bear children at the age of 15, well then 4 generations in your family only stretch 60 years, blood quantum on the other hand, yeah, a little thin, but again, start with yourself and work backwards, get stuck and think @timmy tiger she'll just sense she's needed. lol

Actually you have to say her Name three times fast LOL

Some thoughts on this

In Oklahoma what was Indian Territory prior to 1907, Indians were not included on the Federal Census untill 1900. Actually that is what its named Indian Census.
Before that the Cherokee Nation had there own Census going back to 1840.
As for Rolls those were done by the Federal Government for various reasons mainly for payments and othere things and most of those Rolls only named the Head of Household and the number of people in the House. Of Course there are exceptions and that would be the Chapman and Drennon Rolls in 1851 again in Indian Territory. The earliest Rolls were in 1817 and those list Cherokees that took the 640 acres and moved to what became Arkansas which were moved again in 1828 to Indian Territory

I can trace about 8 Generations back but then it gets real murky Because Cherokees did not write down that kind of Information. And if they did it was typically because they had Married a White who wrote down that information in a Bible OR who had moved out of the Cherokee Nation east and taken up residence as whites. They were not subject to the Removal act of 1830 nor were they ever in fear of being rounded up. Only those that still lived in the Boundries of the Cherokee Nation East.

As for the Eastern Cherokees they had several rolls done after Removal one in 1848 and another in 1851 but they only counted those Cherokees that were living in and around the Qualla Boundry in North Carolina.

So when you tracing ancestry one of the things that you must do is start with what you know for sure
Dad and Mom then Grandparents Connect the Dots tracing back if that leads you to Indian Blood so be it if not well you will know!

Many Many Families have stories but Geneology is proof...

Only through MALE relatives? The last name is the same all the way back, is it not?

So, do you have great aunts or uncles that might know if they descend from a member of the Cherokee Nation?

Hey Drider--
Its a lot of work but ya gotta do it, and just because you find people with the same or similar name to your family doesn't mean that is them. there really isn't any way to definitively prove that your relative is the person listed on a list or roll, as they didn't have social security numbers or dna back then.

But when you do the genealogy, you will likely realize that even if you have a relative named Ella Belle D. V. Van Hemp Smith Furgoson, that there are unbelieveably a million of them! Everyone named their kids the same thing, especially in families.

But the good news is that you will also likely meet other people who have already done some of your family tree research, and hopefully have done a good job with supporting documents. And in meeting your distant cousins you may get all the answers you seek and more.

My point is that just because you see Sam Smith doesn't mean your relative was him. Otherwise, anyone could say that. Either you have secondary information passed down through family, perhaps another name in a native language, census records, court and family records. I need to be clear and say I'm referring to the Cherokee Rolls compiled by the government, not any tribal documents, which hopefully there is support there. A family story or rumor might be pointing at the wrong relative or got otherwise changed through time.

I have a whole family that matches on one the of Cherokee rolls, the brother rumoured to have fled during Indian removal. This familial relationship is documented in a chauncery case file. Another family has said that some or one of the family members is their family and they do not account for some of the other family members. It probably is their family for all I know. Documentation she sites is documentation of moves to Oklahoma and the movement of various other family members, marriages provide info as people in the old days married into the same families sometimes, familial names, pictures, documents, just lots of stuff. It all creates a picture. After you do some searching for family records, you realize just how confusing things can get and how many people were named the same thing or the same people use different names, mispellings, transposition errors.

Can someone make this up? I guess they can just glom on to someone else's family, but I don't think that does much for the individual doing this.

Most tribal membership that I have seen relies on continued relationships with their sovereign nation anyway, so people would know you, or at least know your family.
