But keep in mind census records are only as good as the person who kept them. We have some census records form the early 1900s that show common siblings (same parents, no step parents) but have varying degrees of blood quantum. (one sibling listed as half and another listed as full etc.) The Government had many different ways of trying to get rid of us... through out right genocide, or sometimes the simple swipe of a pen. Just something to keep in mind when digging around...

I need to be clear and say I'm referring to the Cherokee Rolls compiled by the government, not any tribal documents, which hopefully there is support there. A family story or rumor might be pointing at the wrong relative or got otherwise changed through time.

I have a whole family that matches on one the of Cherokee rolls, the brother rumoured to have fled during Indian removal. This familial relationship is documented in a chauncery case file. Another family has said that some or one of the family members is their family and they do not account for some of the other family members. It probably is their family for all I know. Documentation she sites is documentation of moves to Oklahoma and the movement of various other family members, marriages provide info as people in the old days married into the same families sometimes, familial names, pictures, documents, just lots of stuff. It all creates a picture. After you do some searching for family records, you realize just how confusing things can get and how many people were named the same thing or the same people use different names, mispellings, transposition errors.

Can someone make this up? I guess they can just glom on to someone else's family, but I don't think that does much for the individual doing this.

Most tribal membership that I have seen relies on continued relationships with their sovereign nation anyway, so people would know you, or at least know your family.
OK clarity is good, but I'm guessing thats why nations require you to prove lineage cause you are right, and I think that is probably why we see so many of the wannabes up here, they come across a family name and instantly assume, I must be NDN.

Why is it they look for names that sound cool??

Or Wilson

One or the other

Cherokees did not have Sir Names prior to the 1880's ok let me clarify: Fullbloods who only spoke Cherokee did not have Sir Names until the 1880's. Names would be translated and they would be know as that but then they would also have other names
My GG Granfather was known as Brown, Smoke and Soot depending on who was translating. His English name he took when he was in his 40's was Alex Hawkins but I saw that spelled Aleck or Alix. He did not start using the English name till 1890 or so
His Father used several names also, like Tuwodi or Lewis sometimes Hawk

Examples:
BIG JACK Pvt Age 17 Saline Dist
CHICKEN RIDER Pvt Age 25 Saline Dist
DIRT EATER Pvt Age 18 Saline Dist
JOSIAH 1Sgt Age 40 Saline Dist
LITTLE DAVE Pvt Age 30 Saline Dist
OO YAR TER Pvt Age 35 Saline Dist
HAWK, LEWIS Pvt Age 35 Tahlequah Dist
KICK UP PUNKIN PILE Pvt Age 40 Tahlequah Dist
LITTLE HAIR BIG MUSH Pvt Age 35 Tahlequah Dist
PACKEN HAM BEAR MEAT Pvt Age 47 Tahlequah Dist
WOMAN KILLER Pvt Age 20 Tahlequah Dist
YOUNG SQUIRREL FLOPPER Pvt Age 30 Tahlequah Dist

These are Translated names and in some cases there is no Translation into English which was very common. This just a quick list from the Muster Rolls of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifle of the CSA
Taken Oct 1861 Ft Gibson Indian Territory

Common thing also was to use Big or Little Young or Older to be able to tell the difference when somebody has the same name.
By the Way the Name Josiah shows up over and over throughout this Muster Roll
In Cherokee my Name is pronounce Joe-shy

In doing some Kennett family research I ran across some people listed with last name Cannot Say. Other people I ran across named Cannot or Canot, later move and appear with last name Kennett or Kinnett, there were some Kennetts/Kinnetts in the area. Since people didn't read or write, they got whatever the writers of the documents put down. Some Kennetts appear as Kenneth out west because the second t of the fancy Virginia script looked like an h perhaps either to transcriptionists or other people reading the documents.

Yeah, people do just find a name and if it matches holler and shout, even if the age isn't right, don't look to disprove or verify the match, then other people see it on the web and think its right and go along. On the other hand, alot of the old family genealogy books make everyone European and make most common names as derived from European languages and even practically make up crests for people and trace them to kings and queens and castles and deny any native origins for names or anything else. It makes me laugh when I see those crest things.

You see a lot of that in the Scottish clan research. Folks who are not of the same bloodline assume that if their name is the same as a Scottish clan that that must be the same family. Before you know it, they are wearing kilts, blowing a bagpipe and yelling, "For Scotland" while wearing a half blue face. Funny how some of those folks also state that their families ran away into the hills to keep from being part of the Highland Clearances. I see a trend here...

my cuz just got done dealing with that. i have be registered since birth but my cux did not get enrolled until a few years ago. both our dad have the same parents no steps. they had my dad listed as full and my uncle as a lil under half! crazy. so i was listed as half my whole life until i had my daughter (who is 19 now and was born right after the casinos) then all of a sudden i got a card in the mail that said i am now 7/16 and that made my daughter non enroll-able for enrollment with my tribe. lol got in rosebud though.
but at the end of this i must say tired of the i am Cherokee spiel. over it.

HAHAHAHA You guys are funny.

You have been given really good advice here.

You have to start with yourself and work backwards going back and finding where your ancestor's were. The Rolls won't do you any good until you get to an ancestor who might have been in the area that was Cherokee and the Gov documented them on a Roll Just because you find a name that may match, that's not where it ends at all, that's only the beginning. Then you must match and make sure that that is the same person as your ancestor, age, birth date, death date, marriage(s), parents and siblings. So it's not just finding an ancestor on a roll and yeah, Pigheaded is right that if it's only 60-80 years back it's not that hard at all. But you first have to get there.

Family stories are a dime a dozen and as fun as they are to listen to and think about, they are just stories until you find to documentation that verifies it all as being accurate. Don't just go looking for one thing or one ancestor, you might miss out on a lot of really good information about your family, not all of it being or having to do with NDN or Cherokee, but some really neat info is available on someone's ancestry.

As for the statement of "Drives us crazy".LOL It's a short trip for some.

Hope this helps and like I said you've been given some really good advice.

Good luck.

You want one? I means you've been bad or naughty.

Wait...sometimes I've gotten green beads for being naughty. Scratch the naughty part.

I don't mean nothing by this ^^^. I'm just being Jimmy. LOL

ok, wow this site has everything, even punishment! No I don't want one. A friend gave our family crabs for New Years, and we boiled them and ate them and they were great, had a couple stone crab claws, too. We could catch tons of blue and stone crabs and fish and could eat for free except for the restrictions down to once a week. I don't like eating them that much. These blue crabs were better than lobster, I couldn't believe it.

Sorry comadre been a little jumpy lately!!

Good luck.

lol the most advice given was to talk to you! that is pretty darn good advice! good to see you tiger

Good to see you too Migiziwomen.

LOL-I didn't think of it that way. I meant the good advice was to go back step by step from themselves back. You are too funny too, but good point.LOL
