@yaahl

I can't answer that question because I haven't found the answer myself. I don't know why my family did what they did, I'm still trying to research that. As for the rest, yes I was training as a new age medicine woman but that ended a while back. I have been gone from this site for quite a while and the post you were talking about is a very old one from when I first joined on here years ago and have recently just returned and have not edited my profile as of yet. I honestly never thought about a fundraiser and my family wouldn't have been able to help much at the time with the costs. I was trying to teach others about what little of the new age things I know, which isn't much. At the time, 12 hides is what I was told by the new age teacher that I would need. I have since lost contact with that new age teacher and have been trying to learn what I can on my own and have been searching for another. I want to learn the culture because it interests and fascinates me, and it always has. That's my motive, I have no reason to claim tribal rights.

I wasn't going to butt in...but I gotta ask: If you don't know how many generations back...how can you be sure you're related to Cornstalk? Just wondering.

Just yesterday I was thinking how cool it would be, if eventually, in our American melting pot, that every American (Or North American) would have a Native American ancestor. Then back to the reality of Instant Indians being fed New Agey crap.

And as for needing 12 hides for 2 outfits, plus 2 wolf hides...I cannot roll my eyes enough! Go ahead and make whatever you want, but please don't donate these as authentic Native American made items just cuz you may be 1/xxx Native American.

Here's a little story about some new agers that tried to so the tobacco thing on us...

Anyway, this couple who worked for some do-gooder organization who was all about "au natural healing" approached some of the band council to get permission to tag along on one of our community gatherings at the fish camps. So I got tagged for going with them to make sure they didn't get lost. In their effort to "commune" with the elders. They invited some of the elders to travel to the camp in their nice, new, shiny SUV. I said, if you are taking elders, you might want to put a bucket in the back for them. The lady said, "Oh no, they won't need that, we have special crystals and herbs in the vehicle to keep them from needing a bucket." I said, "Fine, suit yourself, hope it works." And proceeded to hop in the front seat with the fella. She also told the elders that there was to be no smoking in the car, as tobacco was sacred and has to be used in a good way blah blah blah... the elders all said... we don't smoke.

Now, if anyone has ever been on the cut and logging roads in the north, they tend to be a bit bumpy and narrow. And... it takes forever to get anywhere... so here we were with Me, the couple and three elders stuck in an SUV for three hours...on a cut road in the Yukon. The New agers must have peed themselves thinking that they had an undivided time with real, Indian elders!

Then it started...

Anyone from the north knows that the elders prefer to chew rather than smoke tobacco and that unlike our plains brethren, tobacco isn't one of the central medicine plants for us. We have others.

And... anyone in the north knows that if you have an elder in your car that chews.. you should have a bucket for them to spit in otherwise they'll think it's ok to just spit on your car's floor.

So... for three hours... all three elders, laughing and chewing and spitting all over the floor of this nice, new, shiny, SUV.

The lady new ager was having a fit at the spitting and the elders using her car as a spitoon... she yells, "Why didn't you tell me about this?" I said, "I did, you said your crystals would stop them. Guess they are broken." Then I said, "But that's ok, you'll have time to get them fixed before we have to leave again and drive back down."

Not to mention that a fully tanned wolf hide goes for around 800.00 to 900.00 bucks... she doesn't want much does she?

Her brain hasn't caught up yet to what came out of her mouth/typing.. but I'm patient, I'll wait for it to catch up.

Try to understand something. Finding a ancestral connection isn't enough. Feeling Native isn't enough. In Native cultures, family is key. But it isn't just genetics, it is participation and support of the greater family and community structure. You have to be a good relative.

It is good to know your history. Colonization has tried to sever us from our personal histories. We are the products, not just of our actions, but those of our ancestors. Mixed blood people are often forced by circumstance to cast their loyalties with one side or the other. These decisions cannot be undone. The shattered families and damaged trust do not ever heal. Scars will remain.

Part of being a mixed blood person is understanding that we *all* walk with the weight of history on our shoulders. Because of decisions your ancestors made, you will have limits in your life. Once you accept this and understand that because of lost languages and abandoned ancestral connections, there will be doors that remain closed. Doors you will learn must remian closed to preserve the integrity of a culture. In many areas you must always remain the respectful outsider.

As an Indian descendant you can support the life of your ancestral people. You can support economic development in Indian Country, language preservation, educational reform, etc. You can humbly contribute your labor, your humor, your respect. And through this learn who modern Native people are beyond wolves, buckskin, and medicine wheels.
