Post Sioux Indians

First I am new to this so I am hoping someone can help me. I found out years ago that I am part Sioux. My great grandmother (my mothers side) was a full Sioux. My grandmother (mother side also)was born in Cormorant MN. I was told there is no longer a tribe there. My cousin and I are in the process of trying to find out about our ancestors. We have a few last names but dont know where to start. We were also told that we were related to Sitting Bull but not sure about it. If there is anyone out there that can help us or point us in a direction as to where the Sioux are we would appreciate it. The last names are:Gibbons (great grandma and Lane (grandmother)...
Please can anyone help.

I would suggest checking out the Geneolgy forum. There are lots of resources there. Good luck.

Sioux is not one big tribe. The peoples the dominant culture calls "Sioux" speak three languages. There are many political/kinship entities:Mdewakantowan, Sisseton, Wahpekute, Wahpetonwan, Yankton, Yanktonai, Oglala, Sichangu, Itazipcho, O'ohenupa, Sihasapa, Hunkpapa, Mnikowozu. There are "Sioux" communities in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. There is a lot of ground to cover.

searching

Find out whatever you can from living relatives. Read up on some culturally related history. The University of Nebraska seems to publish alot of good books. If you have name, an event(birth, death, marriage) and a place you can begin researching.
Census records are online and the LDS has online records.

Happy Searching.
