big fur hair ties?

here is a question for the jinglers out there all over indian country. I noticed this last few powwow seasons that a fad has started with the big long furs on the braids what is up with this fashion faux pas, hahahaha sorry ladies it just looks rediculous on jinglers, fancy shawl and traditional dancers yeah but on jinglers in my opinion they look like there in the way when performing and they look heavy etc....
now this is just my own observation! oh and they seem to hide ur dress!

If they are cut into thin strips then it shouldn't hide the dress. I also think it's how you design the dress so that the fur doesn't cover the designs.

For some people its a regional thing. a ton of folks wore these things traditionally. ONE person does it and EVERYONE does it.

I have to agree, its a regional thing. My daughter will at times wear her smaller pair of otters and sometimes, just braidties or her hair in a bun.

I think they look awesome when cut thinner. They don't hide the dress much when one is dancing out there. Wearing otters is special to us.

Well if you look in the archives of the 70's and 80's p wow pics you will see that everyone was wearing the furs, they were mink and otters. it was mainly the shawl dancers that wore the fur, jinglers wore a scarf around their neck and barrettes. the furs were common then, then came leather with tiny jingles, then ribbons, then the pom pom things for hair ties...

In one of our stories, after the great flood, the otter was considered the very, best swimmer of all the fur-bearing four-footed animals. Otter could dive the deepest. The otter was sent to the bottom of the water and told to bring up some earth. This was the re-birth of Turtle Island.

That's why Ojibwaysweetie says otters are special to us.

I don't think wearing my otter hat hides my head. Ayyee.

Turn the fur piece inside out so you are working on the hide. With a ruler, draw your line with a pen. Use them little handy dandy knife blades, those eco cutters (or whatever they are called) and cut on your straight line. Try not to cut the fur....just the hide!
