Awesome!!!
I was given this dance many years ago and danced it for most of my powwow days. That is how I was taught how to do it and that's how I've always done it. Infact, my very first dress looked like the green one!! lol
Over the years, I've watched the dance change and with those changes, something was lost. I'd be willing to bet good money that if you ask any girl out there where that dance comes from and the story behind it, about half of 'em (depending on the area, probably more around 80% around the southwest) won't know.
The way I was taught, I had to prove myself and know the story and be ready at a moment's notice to tell it to any one who asked. That's how it was back in the day. You had to be ready to answer questions about your style, feathers, designs, etc. if an elder should ask.
Seems like nobody has to earn their dances or feathers anymore. Kind of a shame. While I danced that style, I took care of the dance, my dress and my body (no drinking or smoking) and made sure I conducted myself in a respectful way.
I guess because I had to work so hard to earn the right to do that dance, I really focused on showing those who entrusted me with that dance, that they made the right choice.
Seems like kids at the powwows take all their nice outfits, beadwork, feathers, dances, etc for granted. They're just there to place in the contest and, if not for spot-checks, you wouldn't see 'em in the arena during intertribals/exhibitions.
Because I loved to dance, I was in the arena every chance I got!! lol. Never much for entering the contests, though.
While the new style dresses are very beautiful and I have a couple I made in that style, we must not forget the old way. Don't forget where this dance comes from. Even if you're contemporary, you're still doing a healing dance, so keep that in mind out there in the arena.
