Replacing Rusty Cones

I had to replace about 100 rusty cones on an older Jingle Dress that was gifted to me. The new cones I have to replace them are a lot more shiny than the rest of the cones on the dress. I think it looks kinda silly, two rows of very shiny cones and the rest dull orginial coppenhagen lids. Is there any way to dull down new cones or shine up old ones, so the dress looks more even? Any suggestions would be great. I want to avoid taking all the jingles off the dress and mixing them with the older cones for it to look more even. My boyfriends grandmother (whom has walked on) made this dress and i would prefer to alter it as little as possible.

Also what would you ladies do with rusted unusuable Jingle Cones? It was suggested I bury them.. not sure.

What brand are your new cones? Copenhagen also?
If you had asked about this before your project, I might have suggested Redwood brand jingles. These darken/oxidise fairly fast. Not sure they would match the old Copes tho'. There are chemicals that oxidise various metals but I have no experience with that and I suspect it would be a messy, stinky, tear-your-hair-out kind of job, especially if you already attached the jingles to the dress.

I have a bunch of antique cones from US Tobacco stamped with 1976 Bicentennial designs on them. They are a very dark grey in color but not rusty. I tried polishing them up with some Turtle Wax chrome polish and had only minimal success with that. I might actually make an old-style dress with them.

With proper care, your jingles should not be rusting. Make sure your dresses are thoroughly dry before packing them away.
Good luck on finding a solution.

Well, you don't want it to look funny.

I would do one of two things:.
Replace all the cones, saving the good ones to replace the new ones after they get tarnished , if they get rusty or whatever.
Find an old dress with tarnished cones to reuse on that dress. I have one LOL, but I'd have to see if theres a hundred.

I have seen people paint their cones, but don't know how it lasted.

Never sure what to do with old cones, or especially the trimmings off Cope lids. It makes for a bag of deadly shrapnel.
